A letter to our government

Yesterday was the 123rd birthday of Yosemite, the first national land preserved in America. If you don't know anything about America's national parks and natural lands, you can check out Ken Burns' 6 part series on Amazon instant video FOR FREE (if you have Amazon Prime). There are so many reasons to reopen the government, but it was like a stab in my chest to hear that America's national lands were closed on the day they were officially opened.

So here's a link to send a letter. If this isn't your passion, I'd reccommend you send a letter on behalf of NASA or NSF or WIC. Whatever, just be proactive. Here is my letter on behalf of the national parks. I wrote paragraphs 2 and 4, but feel free to crib them.

The parks support more than a quarter million jobs and more than $30 billion in private-sector spending each year. They generate $10 in economic activity for every federal dollar invested. Local gateway communities depend on the parks and they are suffering every day that the government is shut down and national parks are closed. It is estimated that local communities could lose as much as $30 million per day that the government is shut down due to lost park visitation. People come from all over the world to see America's parks and monuments. The early European colonist were fascinated by the vastness of this continent, and millions of people go to the National Parks and experience that same awe every year. In a misguided effort to reign in spending, its these things that make us better as people that are discarded. In an effort to be more fiscally responsible, our government shouldn't lose sight of America's heritage and shared history. National parks didn't cause the deficit and cutting or closing them won't cure it. The National Park Service has been damaged by compounded budget cuts over the last three years. The budget to operate our national parks, in today's dollars, is already 13 percent less than it was three years ago, a loss of $315 million. In the busy summer tourist season, national parks operated with approximately 1,900 less staff due to the more than $180 million cut in 2013. Reopening the national parks and increasing their budget is a mark of faith in America. These places are our past and future -- they matter, and the people who take care of the parks and love America's land are some of our finest patriots. Please allow them to do their jobs so that one of America's great gifts to the world -- its land and heritage -- can be preserved and maintained with dignity.

To Whomever Is In Charge Of Such Things:

I would like to formally submit my candidacy for the next Doctor. Listed below are various reasons why I would be suitable :

1. I've been mistaken for the Doctor before, which has lead to awkward long rambling explanations about how I am currently not, in fact, the Doctor.

2. I have an extensive collection of hats, some of which I made myself.

3. I look fabulous in coats of varying length, styles, and colors.

4. I also own coats of varying length, styles, and colors.

5. One of those coats is purple leopard print. Make of that what you will.

6. I will make you delicious desserts.

7. I will also make you one of the aforementioned hats.

8. I could also try my hand at making you a coat, but I can not garauntee that it will be as fabulous as the purple leopard print one.

9. I have a very expressive face.

10. I have been told that my hand gestures when explaining things of a sciency nature are highly entertaining.

I realize that there is one thing that may invalidate my candidacy, that I am of the Floridian persuasion. Therefore, I am also willing to accept the role of a Villain within the series, provided that I be allowed to laugh maniacally at some point in time.
