I understand where she was coming from but my mother saying "because you are autistic and struggle with your hair maintenance I wish you had been born with straight hair" feels kind of insane. That's not what I wish I just wish you'd taught me how to deal with my hair in a gentler and kinder way when I was a kid so I didn't associate taking care of my hair with screaming and crying because brushing my hair hurt so badly and no alternate solutions were ever offered because everyone thought I should just push through because my autism was still undiagnosed and you used to be a conservative Christian so you thought that unless children have something Specifically Different there's no reason to make changes to the traditional formula. I like my curly hair a lot and I'm sorry I don't take better care of it but no one ever taught me how to and every time you've tried to fix that it's impossible for me to focus because I'm in fight or flight mode because of the fucking trauma
