Caitlyn: The Dog that Touched the Hearts of the World
Everyone knows the heart breaking story of Caitlyn and how she bittersweetly became a celebrity across the world. Today, 1 month later, she is leaving the vet and heading into foster care!
It’s no surprise that Mel and I chose to donate to Toby’s Fund as she and I are both huge dog lovers. Mel grew up with a Samoyed and had 2 huskies when she still lived in Illinois, but her allergies and time consuming job have made it an inopportune time to have one. I have had a dog since I was 9. I’m now on my 4th dog, and have lived with 3 others. Anyways - Toby’s Fund is a fund in which stray dogs with medical conditions when they are brought in are able to be cared for and put through rehabilitation in-order to be adopted. Toby was a Golden Retriever who was brought to the Charleston Animal Society with chemical burns over a large portion of his body.
When news came after Memorial Day about Caitlyn, I was sickened. I feel terrible when I can’t even get my dog on a walk because I’m busy, let alone intentionally physically harm her with the possible intentions of wanting her to starve to death. I could see the sweetness in her eyes and knew that she was a loving dog that did not deserve this, not that any dog EVER deserves this.
Her story became a trending topic, and before you knew it she was an international celebrity. She’s been awarded “Dog of the Year” in the UK’s Dog Monthly magazine, made it into People:Pets after visiting a 5 year-old boy who was shot and paralyzed ALSO in North Charleston over Memorial Day, and has been photographed with a studly firefighter for the CAS’s upcoming calendar.
There was a benefit for Caitlyn and Toby’s Fund at Republic, which was hosted by local and TV reality stars from Southern Charm. There was quite a turnout, and between donations at the door and the purchase of specialty cocktails, the city raised $14.362 for Toby’s Fund in 9 hours! That’s amazing. The representative for The Charleston Animal Society said they care for over 10,000 animals in a year that need medical treatments, etc., before they can be adopted. The cost for that many dogs? $500,000. So really the 14k is only a dent in their expenses, but it’s a great start! I am sad that Caitlyn and many other dogs have had to go through this experience, however, it has brought a great light to the situation of animal cruelty and more people are fighting for justice for animals.
