I just saw the question the wannabe cop asked you and I agree. It inspired my own question though. I want to be a criminal defense attorney. How can I do my best to protect sex workers and other marginalized groups?

That’s one I can answer much better, iamponine. 

Obviously, pro bono or sliding scale services are big one, if you wind up in a position where you can afford to offer them.  The vast, vast majority of sex workers who are arrested don’t ever go to trial, and oftentimes wind up pleading out when the case against them never would have held up, and there is a huge lack of education in sex worker communities about what’s possible and feasible when we run into trouble with the law, and very little support in pursuing the options that work best for us (which may or may not be pleading out).   As a defense attorney, you potentially have the opportunity to make individual, on-the-ground differences in people’s lives — your job already is to be an advocate for the people you work with, and that is very much what sex workers who’ve been arrested need.  People who can help them navigate the mountains of red tape and life-crashing bureaucracy that come with arrest, and who can lay out what options exist, and help them pick through the potential consequences of each possibility (which public defenders don’t have a lot of impetus to spend much time or energy on). This is especially true if you’re bilingual, or plan to become so — if you follow the wonderful work that the Red Umbrella Project has been doing in following the Human Trafficking Intervention Courts in NYC, you’ll see that as shit as it is to be arrested period, things get exponentially worse for anyone who isn’t fluent in english — even the time it takes them to get through the system is an order of magnitude longer.  

I’m not a lawyer, or anything approaching an expert on how to navigate the criminal justice system (having thankfully thus far never been arrested) so I don’t feel fully equipped to give you the answer you deserve, but I would definitely look into working with organizations like The Sex Workers Project to provide counsel to workers or other marginalized groups that you specifically want to provide service to. Their parent organization, The Urban Justice Center, has a lot of very, very cool stuff on the go.  Whether you want to simply provide good, thorough services to sex workers, or to scale things up and provide education (one of the only places where I won’t cringe if you talk about “empowering” people) about legal rights, options and arrest avoidance, there’s lots of opportunity to make our lives better.

Dear Mom and Dad, 

Dad, whenever you mention how much you did for your parents after you got your first job and were making them money, it personally feels like you’re trying to guilt me into doing the same. Why would I for you when you were the cause of my anorexia? Why would I when you continue to be emotionally abusive and manipulative? Why would I when I, underweight and exercising every single day, call me and how I eat unhealthy? Why would I when you guilt me after looking to have ice cream instead of the holy fruit? I wouldn’t do jack shit for you when it comes to terms of my money. 

Mom, you’re just a guilty. I told you I needed help and what do you do? You find an online therapy thing, give me your credit card and tell me to start a therapy session whenever. I was (am?) depressed and anorexic when I asked. That was the best you bothered to do for me? Damn, maybe I should’ve searched harder for what I thought was necessary at that time. And another thing, when I get a boyfriend don’t tell me ‘you could do better’, ‘I always imagined you with older guys’, and - the worst - ‘if you talk to guys from different schools, don’t be all ‘i have a boyfriend’ on them and turn them down.’ It’s bitchy and it’s condescending. Our age gap is 1 year and a few months. I think that’s better than an 11 year gap with some grizzly man. 

Thank you for already paying my college. You’ll regret it after I’m a great fucking defense attorney, NYS’ first female governor, NYS’ senator, and write a tell-all. That way you can no longer interrupt me and use power-play tactics (never should’ve raised me smart)

I love, love, love my hair. I complain about it hella, but it’s cool that it’ll be wavy and curly one day and then straight the next. 

Cause my eyes are hazel, they can change color to reflect what I’m wearing and sometimes my mood…? Idk I like it. 

I love my legs because heels make them look killer

I also like my boobs because they’re pretty big (36C’s a good size right?), but not big enough to where I have back problems. Praise
