The Northman (2022, USA)
Director: Robert Eggers
Writers: Sjón and Robert Eggers (based on the work by Saxo Grammaticus)
Mini-review:
I saw this was being shown on TV with no ads and jumped on the chance to watch it. As expected of a Robert Eggers movie, it shines in its richly detailed production design and atmospheric cinematography. (I almost couldn't believe how well lit most of the nighttime scenes were). And Eggers doesn't shy away from the brutality of its period setting, no matter how bleak it gets. But the story is engrossing too, especially once the revenge plot really gets going in the second half, which makes up for the uneven pace of the first half. Alexander Skarsgård is great as the brooding leading man, although I was disappointed by his lack of chemistry with Anya Taylor-Joy. Overall, The Northman is an epic journey told with brilliant skill.

“For those wondering the meaning of the language, I have summarised what they say: David: Etaɪ gwentm pərəthú htárasjasənt. Hja dəvə sthātá tava krédastənt. ("These people have come here from Earth. They believe that you invited them") Engineer: mā vulɪt teva? vār-ghud nōmnāja! (David translates as "he asks to know why you are here", but literally it is much more complex. Something like "what does he want of you? name his wish!”) David: ida hmanəm aɪ kja namṛtúh-zdεtaha. gʷɪvah-pjorn’-ɪtthám sas-dātṛ kredah. ("This man is here because he does not want to die. He believes you can give him more life") Engineer: -Initially the line was: kəm gwiváh pjorn-ɪtthám vlnāh? kva hmanəm ida magham kɛrt kja etāzdɛt? (“Why does he want more life? What makes this man so great as to ask such a thing?”) -but then they changed the line to this: wā-norəm, idema ju–gad-ke garasté. (“you would not be a man if you didn’t grow old") Source: "A grammar of modern Indo-European - Prometheus edition", by Carlos Quiles and Fernando Lopez Menchero” From Youtube channel Cinema Box: Prometheus - The Engineer Speaks (Deleted Dialogue Sequence) Very interesting scene and proto indo european language sounds very cool when the engineer speaks it Enjoy...
