Niclas Knudsen (gui), Jeppe Tuxen (B3), Stefan Pasborg (drums) IBRAHIM ELECTRIC has during the last couple of years been one of the most popular European jazz groups… These 3 personal instrumentalists have - besides the popularity with this group - made a name for themselves as some of the most striking on their respective instruments in Scandinavia. IBRAHIM ELECTRIC’s style is not for the pedantic. There are elements of old fashioned soul/jazz — AFRObeat - 60’s acid-power-beat - and of course the trio’s trademark: the fast, almost-punk passages in which the three musicians merge into one playful organism.

Ibrahim Electric performs this Friday at RADAR!

     There are a few Danish circuses that come to town every summer and set up camp. They might bring clowns, elephants, trained seals and reside in camper vans and caravans on the edge of town, but there is one trio of Danish freaks that could out-circus anything that the tame family oriented ring spectacles provide: Ibrahim Electric.

    The Danish trio of Niclas Knudson (Guitar) Stefan Pasborg (drums/percussion) and Jeppe Tuxen (B3 Organ) class themselves as a jazz act, and that might be an apt assessment of their style at times, but their performances and recordings range fromSurf, 70’s prog, Afro beat, Arabic folk music, psychedelic, garage, and gypsy – all in the turn of one piece. They make no bones in describing themselves as being some of the most “striking musicians in the world” on their respective instruments, so if nothing else, it’s good to have fans in your own band!

     Ibrahim Electric has performed in over 25 countries over 3 continents and has garnered positive reviews for their recordings and live concerts in many rock and jazz publications. Their two collaborative albums with renowned trombonist Ray Anderson (Meets Ray Anderson (2005), Meets Ray Anderson again! (2007), gained them a bit of footing in the straight Jazz/improv scene with All About Jazz magazine giving them supportive nods upon release. Their live performances are always energetic, uplifting, and no two of course ever alike.

     Last October the band released their album “The Isle of Man”, in which during the recording process, the band retreated to a “remote island and performed intense experiments on volunteers, resulting in 10 new lives, and ten new stories” as programmatic materiel for their LP. Here is what they came up with, just so you are completely ‘read up’ on what to expect this Friday:

• AppMan: Legend of care that is half human, half smartphone is now a reality.

• Handyman: A well-meaning and very helpful person that we can all now have at arm’s length.

• Reversoman: Everything is behind, everything is god!

• Boogeyman: Now it's only really scary.

• Caveman: With an incredible impact, this figure quickly made “sigmeget” visible in the Danish caves.

• Partyman: A must for any festive event.

• Rainman: He is brilliant when it rains.

• Runningman: Tight, virile and very human.

• Superman: Brown eyes, soft curves, it seems no problem is too small to be listened to.

• Machoman: Who can - Machoman. 

So it seems Ibrahim Electric have not only made some strange and powerful music, but also found 10 new ways to improve the human race itself! What other band can offer you this on Friday night in Aarhus eh?

Ibrahim Electric - Isle of Men

Otetaanpa vaihteeksi ulkomaista julkaisua käsittelyyn. Tänään tarjolla Jazzpossun huomioita tanskalaisen Ibrahim Electricin uusimmasta levystä Isle of Men.

Ibrahim Electric osui Jazzpossun silmiin Spotifyssa muutama vuosi sitten Jazzpossun etsiessä uutta kivaa kuunneltavaa Related artists-toiminnolla ja eihän sitä voinut vastustaa halua koekuunnella levy jolla on sellaisia biisin nimiä kuin Der Alte Das Boot ja Iskender Kebab. 

Ibrahim Electric osoittautui pirskahtelevaksi groove-trioksi joka lainailee soppaansa surutta kaikkea menevää jazzista funkkiin, afro-beattiin, "itämaiseen eksotiikkaan" ja surf rockiin jne.

Isle of Menillä vierailevat myös Rune Olsen lyömäsoittimissa ja Jakob Munck Mortensen lyhyessä puheosassa.

Stefan Pasborg on Jazzpossulle tuttu myös Odessa 5 -kokoonpanostaan jossa Mikko Innanenkin on vaikuttanut. Ibrahim Electric ja Odessa 5 vierailivat viime vuonna Suomessa Tampere Jazz Happeningissa. Onpa jälkipolville jäänyt muutamia YouTube-tallenteitakin: Ibrahim Electric part 1  part 2 ja Odessa 5 .

Pasborg on ollut julkaisuissa aktiivinen ja tämän vuoden aikana on miehen johtamilta kokonpanoilta ilmestynyt parikin levyä livetaltiointi X-Tra Large Live Odessa 5:ltä ja rock-klassikkoja versioiva Free Moby Dick Pasborgin omissa nimissä (feat. Mikko Innanen ja muita).

Knudsenin ja Tuxenin muut musiikilliset tekemiset eivät ole Jazzpossulle tuttuja.

Isle of Men on jo Ibrahim Electricin seitsemäs albumi, suhteellisen kunnioitettava saavutus groovelle uskollisena pysyneelle triolle. Ibrahim Electric välttää hyvin hammond-trion perinteiset sudenkuopat - soundi ei jää liian yksipuoliseksi Knudsenin kitaran hoitaessa useimmat leadiosuudet riittävällä tyylillisellä variaatiolla ja Tuxen ei sorru muutenkaan kuluneimpiin Hammond-kliseisiin ja svengaavat ideat eivät muutenkaan lopu kesken vaan groovea piisaa levyn alusta loppuun.

Vaikka Pasborg itse tunnetaan usein paremmin freehen kallellaan olevana rumpalina niin Isle of Menillä rumputyöskentely on melko suoraviivaista. Rummut eivät soi säästöliekillä, mutta Pasborgin oma show tämä levy ei missään nimessä ole vaikka bändin nimekkäin jäsen onkin.

Uutena mausteena aiempiin levyihin verrattuna Reversoman ja Handyman biiseillä Jazzpossu on ainakin kuulevinaan Knudsenin kitaroinnissa Etelä-Saharalaista vaikutetta Terakaftin tyyliin. 

Kauas ei kuitenkaan tämäkään omena ole puusta pudonnut joten jos Ibrahim Electric on ennestään tuttu niin Isle of Menillä tulee lisää sitä samaa. 

Levyn kansitaiteessa Pasborg, Knudsen ja Tuxen esitetään hulluina tiedemiehinä tekemässä salaisella saarella salaisia kokeita perustuen miehisen psyyken eri puoliin (josta syystä biisien Megaman-pahisnimet). Musiikillisten vaikutteiden rehevää sekamelskaa kuunnellessa vertaus b-kauhuleffasta repäistyihin tiedemiehiin tuntuu luontevalta.  

Isle of Men tekee mitä lupaa - sopivasti kieli poskessa vedettyä groovea laajalla skaalalla vaikutteita - mutta ei juuri enempää, vaan haittaako tuo. Tulevien vuosien kestosuosikkia Jazzpossun levylautaselle tästä lätystä ei taida tulla, mutta eiköhän tätä tule fiilisteltyä uudestaan silloin tällöin kuitenkin.
