Headcanon A:  realisticHe’s probably the best dad ever. Ok, well: he’s clueless, a man-child and can’t cook a toast without burning the house down, but… he’s the most caring, supportive, proudest father ever. The type who carries his daughter’s drawings and shows them to everyone and can’t shut up about her achievements, not to show off, just because he’s so proud of her.

Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilariousGoing with the father thing: despite the fact that he’s not that old compared to everyone else (he’s like 34), being a real-life dad he has decided he wants to be seen as a father figure by the younger Ibun guys (aka Houmei, Ganpuku, Sho'un and Jyoan). He tries really really hard to be the “if you’re having some girl - or boy, not gonna judge - problems, you know you can talk to me about it, right?” person, much to the dudes’ annoyance. However, I feel that definitely Sho'un and possibly Jyoan may actually find the dad act helpful from time to time (Sho'un because of his own father issues, Jyoan because of family headcanons you’ll find below. Houmei’s father figure, if he’d ever need one, would be Jikaku, while Puku probably needs an “older brother/sister” figure rather than a father figure, hence Jyoan as its equivalent.)

Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friendsWell… despite him being a good dad and husband, I’m sure his family life wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. I can’t bring myself to picture him cheating on his wife or anything, but she must’ve had her reasons to leave him, let’s face it. Perhaps his cluelesness brought his family some problems, perhaps of financial nature. O he simply didn’t help enough around the house, being too busy goofing off with their daughter but not contributing much to anything else. Or perhaps his wife’s family saw him as a bit of a loser, and at the end she started to see him as such as well.Anyways, the reason he’s competing in the race to become a Sanzo is most likely linked to his family situation: he wants to to prove his wife that he’s capable of achieving something, in hopes she will take him back. He’s still madly in love with her and his daughter is the most important thing of the world.

Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my ownWell… even though I see him as one of the “mostly straight” guys of Ibun, and right now I don’t really ship him with anyonee (but his wife), I imagine him having a “However, that one time in college…” story :’D Also, yeah, he went to college. On a scholarship, because he was an athlete of some kind. That’s where he met his wife. This is my backround headcanon for him now, until more is revealed :’)

Jyoan

Headcanon A:  realisticHe’s HELLA jealous of everyone else doing better than him in the competition, but especially Houmei. Oh god, he’s so freaking envious of Houmei. He sees him as a threat and his direct rival, even thoug the rivarly is pretty much one-sided…and he knows that, which pisses him off even more, of course :’)

Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilariousOk, time to unveil one of my favorite random funny Jyoan’s headcanons: he has a huge collection of 70’s  shoujo manga (think Ryoko Ikeda, Sumika Yamamoto) because they’re TOTALLY HIS AESTHETIC; if he’s capable of drawing (which is another headcanon of mine), this is what his drawing style would look like. The day Puku finds out, he’LL make fun of him relentelessely

Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friendsWell, this has basis in canon, but: he had a terrible childhood. I can picture him growing up pretty much by himself, without much support from his parents for various reasons (they might be dead because of the war, or simply didn’t have the means to look after him much). He’s probably the definition of a someone who had to grow up too quickly, but because of that he ends up being emotionally immature. Also, he probably has several traumas (and possibly ptsd) as a result of being a child during wartime. (I have several headcanons based on this but things would get too depressing too quickly :/ )

Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.I don’t care about what it’s been said so far about hanyous being unable to procreate: he has youkai blood in him. He might be a full hanyou without the red hair and red eyes (note his eyes are reddish pink in some illustration), or just have traces of youkai DNA. The rose he has on his collarbone is actually a youkai mark, not a tattoo. I wrote a long-ass post a long time ago going more in depth with this theory with more evidence, perhaps I should bring it back…

Saiyuki Ibun family headcanons

on the basis of factual and non-factual evidence:

Toudai: his family is poor, he has a bunch of younger siblings (he's the oldest) and he had to interrupt his studies in order to support it, so he began working very young. Possibly a gravely sick family member, and possibly one of the parents is already dead. He moved out to live with his gilfriend, and we all know what happened next...

Genkai: we know a bit about his family already: he had youkai parents that were probably middle-class, but became rich by exploiting his powers; they ended up being killed for selling informations to opposing factions. He and his twin Taruchie have been separated at some point.

Seiran: again, we know a bit about him: he's an orphan that has been raised in a temple under a former Sanzo's wing; I'm picturing he was either abandoned or his parents were died (possibly due to a war?). I like to think his upbringing was similar to Kouryuu's.

Doutaku: he's the youngest of a very large family, possibly farmers: his parents couldn't afford raising another child, so he left home very early on in order to work and provide for himself. He's still in contact with his family and has a ton of nephews (from his older siblings)

Jyoan: we know that he grew up in a war zone, so it's possible he's also an orphan, but unlike Seiran he hasn't been adopted and has lived as a stray kid; it's possible his mother is still alive and has left him behind, but he has never met his father. He might have half-siblings.

Ganpuku: he has a very tranquil family life compared to most: his parents are peddling merchants and their income is pretty solid; he has a good relationship with them, especially with his mother. He may have an older sister. The fact that they've been discriminated brought them closer.

Ryuzen: he probably comes from the wealthiest family out of everyone: his parents have a high-status job (doctors, lawyers), so of course he’s had the chance to pursue his studies. He's probably an only child, but he wasn't overly spoiled; the focus has always been on his merits.

Sho'un: we know that he was raised in a temple and his father was the owner; they've always butted heads because of his rebellious nature. He's most likely an only child or the only male, befitting the role of the heir. His father's death brought the family closer.

Gichou: he's a "country boy", brought up in a normal but lower-income family. He used to be the star of his high school sport's team (lol), so he could continue his studies. He met his wife in college, got married and had a daughter, till the break-up happened T.T (poor Gitchon)

Soujin: I envision a sort of "Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck" past for him: started out with nothing, travelled a lot, tackled all kinds of careers till he settled down somewhere with wife and children and some fruitful activity. He became a monk after his wife's death and his children had started families on their own.

Houmei: WHO. THE FUCK. KNOWS. For real, it's pretty impossible at this point to get a picture. All I know that whether he was poor or an aristocrat, he didn't have a normal upbringing, and took a not-so-righteous path at some point before Sanzohood. I'd enjoy a runaway backstory.
