It had been only a few days since Auriel, Ser Duncan, and her cousin Egg had slipped away from King’s Landing in the quiet of the night. At first, the freedom had felt incredible. There were no more watchful eyes from whispering courtiers lingering on her every movement, no more feeling suffocated by the pressures of court life. She and her companions could do exactly as they pleased, whenever they pleased. But this freedom, she quickly learned, seemed to come hand in hand with homesickness. She missed home far more than she had anticipated. Her father’s warm, comforting voice, her siblings and cousins crowding too close together during meals, even the irritating bustle of servants in the mornings. Out here, camping beneath endless stretches of sky, everything suddenly felt terribly far away. Curled up against a tree trunk nearby their camp, Auriel let out a soft laugh at herself and quickly wiped the tears from her cheek with the back of her hand before anyone could comment on it. “Actually…yeah, I think that would make me feel better.” The beginnings of a smile started to tug at her lips. “So…who should we start with?”
"Him."
Egg could not say he was homesick. Family was something he found best loved from a distance, and the allure of adventure was still strong for him. Even King's Landing seemed dull compared to the open road, even if he did miss some of his princely comforts. He would get used to it, if it would make him a great knight, like Ser Duncan promised.
He pointed to one of a gaggle of stableboys about his own age.
"He's the inn keep's son. I watched him short change Duncan when he paid for breakfast this morning. He told me not to get involved..."
Egg grinned.
"But he never said anything to you."
