Reflections: Importance and Disturbance of Family Mealtimes

Compared with 6th graders who often ate dinner with their parents, those who rarely did so were far more more likely to display anxiety and depression, delinquency and substance use, and poor school grades, even after many other aspects of parenting were controlled. In this study, frequent family mealtimes also protected low-socioeconomic status youths from delinquency and substance use and from classroom learning problems. (Based on Luthar & Latendresse, 2005b)

It is no wonder why family mealtimes benefit children. It is a designated set time in which, under normal circumstances, children are engaged and tuned into their families. Just like work time takes away from family bonding, schooling and technology can take away from bonding at family meals as well. It is one of the few times that you are not expected to do much other than satiate hunger.

Under cut: Personal Commentary

This has made me reflect on my own upbringing. For almost my entire life, I have lived in a multi-generational household. Mom or grandma would call from the kitchen, and you were expected to be there, lest your food go cold and soggy. If grandpa or dad were home, they would come along from whatever preoccupied them and have a seat at the table. Although sometimes it was pleasantly quiet, with grandma occasionally asking whether we wanted more tortillas or bread, other times it was rambunctious and full of laughter. We would share stories and ask questions. For example, someone would ask how another family member's day was going, what they were up to, while someone would reminisce about the food being eaten and how it reminded them of a moment in time that long passed. It was a designated time to learn and enjoy the company in front of you.

However, since then, the use of technology has boomed. The pervasive use of technology has impacted the way we interact. Technology, social media, and content has affected the way we communicate, and while, I am not one to bash technology, it is clear that people now spend more time glues to their screens than spending time with each other. That said, I find it happening during mealtimes with my little family now. My mom brings her phone to the table, playing videos and hardly engaging in conversation with us. My brother and I will talk from time to time, but since it now has become routine that technology has a place with us at the table, we indulge.

While I cannot change this habit for others, I am actively trying to change this habit within myself. It means leaving my phone in another room, trying to spark conversation with those that will listen and not use their phone while I am talking at the dinner table, telling others that I would like their full attention while I am talking and not continuing to talk if I feel I am wasting my time. It is simply disrespectful to constantly ask someone to repeat themselves when the behavior obstructing the conversation from continuing is someone's lack of discipline to give their attention to you.

The family mealtime is sacred and should be treated as such.

Okay hear me out: i actually had 0 plans to write any smut for awhile, but i got a comment on an old heatfic yesterday and looking at it made me go "i miss how snuggly catra gets on her heat" and then it just..... happened. i wrote that last night and edited it this morning instead of working on gutt lol. i kinda like doing smutshots because it means i can just write smut whenever i feel like it instead of having to do it at certain story beats
