  Cold air bites at his cheeks and the whole world is so blue that it hurts. It’s a whirlwind trapped within a confined cone of ether, blue dust and light and ice that falls back in a haze that’s almost blinding. Teach half reaches for the rudders to push them back out but a tailwind catches the longboat and James works it. They spiral, controlled, twisting along with the same current as the air that the ice comet produces.   It’s a small thing, compared to the actual tail. Not even half the size of James, a ball of solid ice hurtling through the atmosphere. Teach keeps a hand on the side of the boat even as he lurches halfway forward, cybernetic leg knocking against James’s.   “Easy,” he warns, but the words are lost beneath the thunder of the comet tail. The longboat swerves out and then right back in, and this time they’re close enough to the body of the comet that Teach could reach out and touch it with his prosthetic arm – so he does.   It’s a solid, rolling weight under his fingers. Like touching a wheel that’s still in motion, a rope that slides through your hands too fast to really grasp.   “Holy shit,” crows James. He leans as far sideways as he can, caged in by the duel-rudder system. “Are you fucking touching it? That’s amazing!”
