Yamato looked at the magnetic whiteboard calendar on the fridge. As he was the landlord of a share house, he needed to have a general idea of everyone's schedule. “Oh, a birthday.”
“Whose birthday?” Soryu asked as he entered the kitchen. He grabbed his coffee mug and poured himself some coffee that Yamato had made earlier.
“Jasmine’s,” Yamato replied. “Pancakes or omelette, Sor?”
“Omelette,” Soryu answered, stirring his coffee. “Thanks, Yamato.” After waiting for Yamato to make breakfast, Soryu took his plate and coffee out to the common dining area.
“Morning,” Shusuke muttered, looking like he could go back to sleep at any moment.
“Ikky stop messing around,” Kyoga sighed, as he and Ichthys entered the kitchen. “We’re gonna be late for work and it’s your fault. Again.”
“Aw, what’s life without a little fun?” Ichthys grinned. “Morning guys.”
Yamato was making pancakes for Shusuke. “Pancakes or Omelettes?”
“Pancakes,” Kyoga answered as he poured himself some coffee
“Got it,” Yamato said. “By the way, Jasmine’s birthday is coming up soon. We should throw her a birthday party.”
“Ohh party!” Ichthys was bouncing on the balls of his feet. “I’m in!”
Kyoga chuckled. “Me too.”
Shusuke sighed but nodded as well. Everyone knew he wasn’t the most social of them all.
“I’ll tell Takuto later,” Kyoga said, taking his plate of pancakes from the counter. “He just got in from work earlier and looked like hell froze over.”
“Ah yeah,” Yamato replied, putting out Ichthys’ plate of pancakes on the counter. “He mentioned something about minor security breaches in his company’s computer network. They’ve had him work overtime the past two weeks.”
“Poor Takkun,” Ichthys frowned. “Thanks for the food, Yamato,” he added, following Kyoga and Shusuke out to the dining area.
‘Glad Jasmine already left for her internship over at MPD headquarters,’ Yamato thought to himself. ‘Makes planning this out a lot easier for us.’ He smiled as he made himself an omelette.
The next weekend, Jasmine was lying on the sofa in the living room, idly channel surfing.
“Sofa hog,” Takuto muttered, walking by with an onigiri in his hand. His laptop was tucked under his arm.
“Sorry,” Jasmine sighed, curling up so Takuto could sit on the other end of the sofa. “Still working on your company’s problem?”
“Nah,” he replied. “Finally get to work on my hobby.”
“Your Shiffey collection?”
“...none of your business!” He hissed, his cheeks reddening. He angrily stuffed the onigiri into his mouth.
“Ah, sorry, Takuto,” she replied nonplussed as she continued channel surfing.
“Can’t you stick to one channel?” Takuto mumbled with his mouth full of onigiri.
“Nothing good on right now. Shouldn't talk with your mouth full.”
“I’m...” Takuto’s reply was cut short by a choking fit. Everyone in the house knew Takuto chokes on his food easily.
“Here,” Shusuke said, entering the living room with a bottle of water. “Going to work now,” he added, before heading to the orphanage where he worked as a youth coach. He stood by the living room doorway fighting with his jacket zipper.
Meanwhile, Takuto fumbled to open the bottle, sipping the water lest he choke from that as well.
What Jasmine didn't know was that she was being distracted from noticing the others sneaking past the living room doorway to get to the kitchen.
“Alright,” Yamato whispered to the others as they deposited the shopping bags on the kitchen floor. “I got the rest. We’ll decorate the place after Jasmine goes to bed tonight.”
Kyoga nodded and grabbed an orange from the counter before heading into the living room, passing Shusuke, who finally got his jacket zipped up. “Hey, what’s up?” Kyoga asked casually, sitting down on the other sofa.
“That one can’t decide on a show to watch,” Takuto muttered.
“Well hey, sorry,” Jasmine sighed. “Want me to pop in a DVD or something?”
Takuto shook his head, realizing along with Kyoga that Jasmine would have to get up and she would see the others still in the kitchen. “Nah, I’m not really paying attention, even though it is kinda annoying.”
Kyoga stood up, heading back to the kitchen, stopping near the doorway and blocking the view with his body. “Oh, you guys want anything from the kitchen? Jas?”
The others in the kitchen scrambled to get out of sight, in case she looked up, but luckily, she was finally drawn to a nature show about wolves. “Nah,” she replied, not looking up. “I’m good.”
Takuto also shook his head, busily typing away on his laptop. Making sure Jasmine was still watching TV, he was searching for a bakery that made a specific type of cake. He and Soryu had gone to the neighborhood bakeries without finding it. Soryu was at work despite it being the weekend, and as he was one of the few who had a car, Takuto was to send Soryu the directions to the bakery that had the cake. Trouble was finding it.
After an extensive search, Takuto found one bakery over in the next town that made that ever elusive cake. ‘Finally,’ he thought to himself, as he sent the bakery’s website and directions to Soryu. ‘Now I can nap.’
The others managed to casually go back and forth from the kitchen, not arousing Jasmine’s suspicions in the least.
“Woo!” Ichthys exclaimed, as he was playing with one a remote controlled toy car, racing it around the floor, making it go in and out of the living room.
Takuto woke up from his nap and scowled at Ichthys. “Damn problem child,” he muttered, before sighing and shifting a bit on the sofa before falling back asleep.
“Ah, I should do my homework,” Jasmine sighed, closing the TV and standing up. She took a quilt from the back of the sofa and covered Takuto with it, before heading upstairs to her room.
“Oh Jas,” Yamato called out as he stepped out of the kitchen. “What do you want for dinner tonight?”
“Anything you make is great, Yamato,” Jasmine replied. “Probably need to wake up Mr. Particular over there,” she added, pointing over to Takuto. “I put off doing my homework so I’ll be holed up in my room for awhile.”
“Got it,” Yamato noded. “I’ll call you for dinner later then.”
After Jasmine closed the door to her room, the guys sprung into action. While they couldn’t decorate the house yet, they needed to hide the bags with the party favors and decorations behind the sofa, as there wasn’t enough storage space in the kitchen or dining area.
“Ikky c’mon,” Kyoga sighed, as Ichthys was still playing with that remote controlled car. “We don’t have time.”
“All right.. Sorry,” Ichthys pouted, putting the car and remote on the coffee table, before going to help hide the shopping bags behind the sofa.
Soryu came into the house with the cake, after getting the all clear text from Takuto.
“Thanks, Sor,” Yamato said, taking the cafe from him. “I’ll put this away in the fridge. Now it’s just waiting till late tonight to decorate the living room.”
After a normal dinner and the nightly argument on which shows to watch, Jasmine decided to turn in. She had plans to visit her parents for her birthday, having not said anything about it to her housemates. “Night guys,” she said, standing up. “I’m planning to visit my folks tomorrow so I’ll be leaving early in the morning.”
She headed upstairs without noticing the quiet sense of panic amongst the guys.
“Good thing she said that now,” Soryu sighed. “Now what?”
“That works out better,” Yamato said. “We’ll have all day to decorate and prepare without rushing. I’ll just ask her when she’s going to come back tomorrow morning.”
“High maintenance,” Shusuke muttered.
“I’m gonna get some taiyaki for the party then,” Ichthys said. “Since we rushed earlier and didn’t get any.”
“Alright,” Yamato nodded. “I’ll think of anything else we might need and give you a list.”
The next morning Jasmine was surprised to see Yamato in the kitchen. He usually slept in on the weekends. “Morning, Yamato,” she greeted, adjusting her backpack.
“Morning,” he smiled, sipping his coffee. “Oh, when are you coming back?” He asked. “I’d like to make a special dinner to celebrate your birthday.”
“Oh. Sometime tonight. Around 7.”
“Great! See you later then.”
After Jasmine left Takuto wandered into the kitchen. “I can keep an eye on the train schedule.”
The day zoomed fast with the guys busy decorating or getting party food. Yamato managed to put together a Chinese banquet styled dinner. The coffee table was ladened with party foods and the living area was decorated with streamers and balloons. All that was left was to wait for the birthday girl.
“Train should be arriving soon,” Takuto said, looking at his laptop. “Should take her 15 minutes to walk here.”
“Let’s close the lights,” Kyoga grinned.
“Good idea!” Ichthys agreed.
“I’ll go to my room and look out my window,” Soryu said. “Since it overlooks the street.”
Half hour later Soryu yelled out, “She’s coming!”
Shusuke shut the lights after the others gathered in the living area.
Jasmine yawned as she opened the door. “I’m home....”....‘Wait....Why’s it so dark?’ she thought to herself. ‘Did someone break in?’ Her internship training at MPD caused her to enter the house cautiously, finding the hallway lightswitch and flipping it on, only to scream and fall on her backside when the guys yelled out ‘Happy Birthday.”
Soryu and Shusuke came over to help her up.
“Sorry for the scare,” Soryu said, kissing her on the cheek.
“Happy Birthday,” Shusuke said, pulling out a bouquet of wildflowers from out of nowhere.
Jasmin was stunned. While she wanted to kill them all for nearly giving her a heart attack, she was incredibly happy that her housemates went out of their way to put this together for her.
“Come on Birthday Girl,” Kyoga said, pulling out a chair at the dinner table.
“We’re hungry, hurry up!” Takuto scowled.
And so the night went on with food, friends, and party festivities, making this one of the best birthdays Jasmine ever had.
A/N: This began as a regular Sharehouse AU, but @icedragonsprincess mentioned her birthday. So the prompt morphed to this. Also I apologize for not writing Yamato as accurately as the others. I’ve only read Ren’s route in MWa7R and whatever stories were available in Sweet Cafe. I hope his characterization is passable for this AU setting.
Happy Birthday, Summitto! <3
