Like with most things, I was a bit late to the White Stripes party and though I recall listening to their third album White Blood Cells, I didn’t really ‘get them’ until their global barnstorming hit Seven Nation Army. This is their sixth and final studio album from 2007. The title refers to a Lancashire saying, familiar across the UK, ‘ecky thump’, Jack and Meg are channelling Cockney Pearly Kings and Queens on the front cover, Queen Victoria makes an appearance on the inside cover art, and the track Prickly Thorn, But Sweetly Worn features Scottish bagpipes: it’s a rather bizarre musical tour of the British Isles. It’s the more idiosyncratic songs that appeal to me, rather than the heavy chug of guitars that features on the title track and the album’s first single. Of these, Rag and Bone is brilliant, classic White Stripes: a subverted trad blues song (in terms of music and lyrics) laced with Jack White’s own particular humour. I always enjoy the songs where Meg gets a look in as well – and a microphone connected to the mains. She gets a whole (very short) spoken word song to herself: St Andrew (This Battle Is In The Air) which acts as a coda to the aforementioned bagpipe-featuring Prickly Thorn. Little Cream Soda is another highlight for me, it’s offhand repeated refrain “oh well, oh well” echoing Peter Green’s 1969 Fleetwood Mac composition of the same name – particularly poignant as I was listening to this when I heard the sad news that he died last week. But the best song on the album is actually a cover – Conquest – complete with mariachi brass band, flamenco guitar flourishes, trumpet solos and total OTT melodrama. It’s a worthy song for them to bow out on after 10 years of monochrome rock.
