7 reasons why I love Kate Bush...

1. The Man With The Child In His Eyes (1979)

When I heard this song for the first time, I just had bought her best-of album “The Whole Story” and just played it from the start through the end. It was the third song playing and it immediately gave me some kind of melancholic feel. So simple and honest, she wrote it when she was only 13 years old. Why I love it so much is because it reminds me with a bitter sweetness of that age, when I was growing up and my childhood fantasy worlds started to disappear. In that aspect, it feels similar to the Spice Girls’ “Viva Forever”, yet it is less bitter and more towards the sweet end of it.

2. Her dance moves

Of course, “Running Up That Hill” could be one separate reason why, but I thought that the corresponding video just gives the best example of her amazing skills when it comes to heartfelt, emotional dance. She knows like no other to translate her music to the perfect moves. The video as a conceptual piece surely stands out as well, with this gateway and all these people wearing masks of her and her dancing partner, while she at one point also tries to get through them.

3. Her manic vocals

Her fourth studio album “The Dreaming” (1982) mainly got her admirers over the years, with its energetic, aggressive, yet exhausting soundscape and experimental production techniques, as it was not a very easy listen at first. My very favourite element of this era has been her extreme, manic vocals. They convey such a craziness, that fills me with life! Besides “Sat In Your Lap”’s chorus, other songs like “Suspended In Gaffa” and “Houdini” also showcase this very well on that album.

4. The power of “Aerial” (2005)

The closing segment of the second disc of the album of the same name is a summer morning that just kicks in like no other. How perfect is the way she conveys the euphoria of this flight?

I listened to her most recent album “50 Words For Snow” last Winter, and while I admit, that it cannot work the same during any season, in Winter it is pure magic. The opening song “Snowflake” let’s me feel the heaviness of the snow falling, the piano notes and she just sings “the world is so loud, keep falling and I’ll find you”…. I am there and I feel the warmth of a home, while I’m looking out of the window.

6. Rubberband Girl (1993)

While the “Red Shoes” album from 1993 is full of dramatic and hip-shaking tunes, the opening track definitely stands out with its catchiness. I definitely feel empowered each time I listen to the song.

7. The whole “Hounds Of Love” album

If I had to name my favourite Kate Bush album, I would definitely say “Hounds Of Love” from 1985. Divided in two sides, the first one features all the singles, with the iconic “Running Up That Hill” opening and also the rumbling “The Big Sky” being my dearest. The second side, called “The Ninth Wave” has a set of songs that tell of a desperate emotional journey with a cinematic feel, touching deeply with “And Dream Of Sheep”, experimenting with soundscapes in “Waking The Witch” and setting out into space for looking at our globe from high above in “Hello Earth” (one of my personal faves).

Still, there are many more reasons why…

…like the thumping “Red Shoes” song, the sheer happiness of “Wuthering Heights”, the powerful and moving “Moments Of Pleasure” or the “O-uh-hu-uuh”’s from “This Woman’s Work”. The aforementioned seven at least give a good overview over why I love Kate Bush.
