The Global Roundtable will be a full-day, in person, high-level event with a signature panel, complemented by a lunchtime "matchmaking" session and breakout groups in the afternoon to delve deeper into the specifics of capacity-building.

The Global Round-table will be a full-day, in person, high-level event with a signature panel, complemented by a lunchtime "matchmaking" session and breakout groups in the afternoon to delve deeper into the specifics of capacity-building.

It is clear that capacity-building is key to developing the resources, skills, policies and institutions necessary to increase the resilience and ICT security of States. It supports the framework of responsible State behavior in the use of ICTs and contributes to the building of a safe and secure ICT environment for all, which is an essential building block for sustainable digital development. As the digital landscape evolves, it is more important and urgent than ever that capacity-building efforts are accelerated to ensure that all States can safely and securely seize the benefits of digital technologies. It is also vital that the international community come together to encourage, assist and inspire one another by sharing success stories and integrating lessons learnt into future capacity-building programmes.

Evaluation of projects and activities that leverage the power of ICTs to advance sustainable development.

From 10 October 2023 to 31 January 2024, all WSIS stakeholders are invited to submit related projects to the WSIS Prize contest. The contest was developed as a mechanism to evaluate projects and activities that leverage the power of ICTs to advance sustainable development.

Ensure a comprehensive approach to accessibility.

The Joint Coordination Activity on Accessibility and Human Factors (JCA-AHF) acts as the first point of contact for those interested in ITU’s accessibility-related activities, with its chief responsibility being the coordination of accessibility work undertaken within ITU (across ITU-D, ITU-R and ITU-T) and in concert with other United Nations organizations, activities and specialized agencies, ISO, IEC, regional and national SDOs, industry groups, academia, disability organizations and telecommunication user groups for persons with disabilities. Reporting to TSAG, JCA-AHF works to ensure a comprehensive approach to accessibility in close collaboration with ITU’s various expert groups, especially Question 24/16, 26/16 in ITU-T Study Group 16, and Question 7/1 in ITU-D Study Group 1.

The IRG-AVA - Intersector Rapporteur Group Audiovisual Media Accessibility studies topics related to audiovisual media accessibility and aims at developing draft Recommendations for "Access Systems" that can be used for all media delivery systems, including broadcast, cable, Internet, and IPTV. The IRG also addresses matters contributing to the coordination of the standardization work of the involved ITU-T and ITU-R groups and collaborates with other SDOs and other audiovisual media organizations (e.g., forums and consortia, research institutes and academia)

The global market for Smart Highway is projected to reach US$62.6 billion by 2025, driven by growing interest in smart cities as the only sustainable way to accommodate 7+ billion people on earth and the ensuing increase in smart transportation and intelligent transportation systems (ITS). Smart highways are an integral part of smart transportation which encompasses car sharing; congestion management; emergency response; integrated traffic light management; public information systems; road user charging; smart parking; and traffic monitoring and management. The need for smart transportation is growing more urgent than ever with global cities plagued by increasing congestion on roads and rise in vehicular emissions. Governments worldwide are focusing on building infrastructure which is key to economic growth and societal evolution. The new budgetary focus on infrastructure comes at a time when infrastructure around the world is collapsing as a result of chronic underfunding of critical infrastructure. A key driver of optimism for bigger transportation development budgets in the coming years, is the infrastructure gap in global roadways to the tune of US$8 trillion for the cumulative period 2016-2040, which remains the highest as compared to US$2 trillion for rail, US$3 trillion for energy, US$1 trillion for water & US$2 trillion for telecom. Against this backdrop, world’s highways will rapidly evolve and develop supported by committed government support and initiatives aimed at connecting cities and countries for better economic growth and gains. The importance attached to transportation infrastructure development can be put into perspective by the fact that over 25% to 30% of World Bank funding support to developing countries is purposed for transportation infrastructure projects, higher than health, education and social services.  Read More…
