Been writing a lot of ideas for Zodiac lately. Trying to get a better feel of the environment and the characters and their dynamics. I started with this idea that Idania has some kind of problem. I wanted something that would be easy for me to portray without too much backlask from a tumblr-like community. I wanted something that wasn’t a disability that you could see, that would make her like... Seem perfectly fine unless you got to know her.

I didn’t want her to be illiterate, because she’s me-adjacent, so but I thought maybe she could be and it would be a character point. I wanted her to be the storyteller, maybe she is so creative because there are Spirits that tell her these True Stories from the whole of historical knowledge and so she was never taught to read and write.

But then I realized, in the setting, people have to know multiple languages, or at least they have common languages among certain elements. Like some people can speak Watertongue, and others know Earthian, etc. Maybe she can only do the one.

Then I saw a thing on dysgraphia and was like MAYBE that’s her problem. But I couldn’t figure out how to make that a thing? So then I tried to work with that idea and it went nowhere.

So the other day I thought about this idea of her having a bunch of books that she reads between towns, that she gets books to read in captivity because it helps her cope, and she has all these books and journals between towns and she trades them out. Because every big town will have a different set of books because there’s no like... universal printer. There’s probably no printing press in the setting, which means they have to have people transcribing this shit. Books are popular, so being a scribe is a worthy profession. Maybe she figured after the refugees settled in the Virgo city that she would be a scribe so she can help spread books around. And because so much was destroyed in the city. But she can’t write. Because she can’t read.

*scratch head* Huh, well that was fun. Thought of that mostly on the fly.

But the point was she’s dyslexic. She’s just as smart as anybody else, it just takes her longer to read because the letters are all fucky. And she doesn’t write very well because the letters are wrong. So she just reads and gets told stories by the Spirits and she can remember most of them because she can’t look things up as easily as someone else. And most of the time, someone will show her how to do something and expect her to be an expert at it because that’s kinda her job.

So she’s good at watching someone do a thing and remembering how to do it. Which is how she knows how to do Alden’s breathing treatments for his Curse (asthma) and she gets pretty good at making potions and shit for headaches and other things (she had to watch the doctors doing it all the time).

I love our original idea. I just wish I could focus on it.
