Valerie is a sweet woman, a mother at heart. After being thrown out of her home for being transgender at sixteen, she’s had to scavenge the whole town for food, bathe in rivers when no one was around and do other unpleasant things she would rather not talk about or she’ll cry. One day, she found an abandoned house and claimed it for herself. This is the house she lives in now, with the kids she’s taken in. Even though she doesn’t have a lot of money and has been unemployed for a long time, she takes all the opportunities she can to earn money and give the kids what they need and want to grow up happy and loved.
Idelle calls Valerie her big sister. She was abandoned as a teen for being transgender as well, and they met on the streets, where they promised to take care of each other. But since Valerie was older and on the streets for longer, she ended up doing most of the helping. Idelle is very grateful for her help and support. She helps Valerie pay the bills and take care of the house, but it’s been tough since they’re both unemployed. One day, she wants to make money and live in her own house; maybe get married and have some kids. But it all sounds like such a distant dream...
Priscilla is, as she describes herself, impatient. She has problems opening up and growing intimate with people after being thrown out of her house; she feels like no one will be able to love her anymore, since her own parents didn’t. It all started when she found out she was transgender: started growing her hair, changing her style - which earned the complete disapproval of her parents - and, eventually, bought hormones without her parents’ consent or knowledge. They said they would never allow her to do that to herself if they knew, but she said she would do it no matter what they thought, even if it meant not having a doctor check if everything was right in her body. The result was being thrown on the streets.
Lauren was kicked out when her parents found her kissing a girl on the couch. Plain and simple. Her dad couldn’t stand it, and was the driving force to her being kicked out. Even though she doesn’t think they’ll take her back in, she hopes they’ll one day accept her for who she is. She’s bratty, annoying and flirty, with really all the girls she can find. She’s learning a bit about music and thinking of making romantic songs to serenade girls with.
Kyle was the only one who left his home. He’s known he was a man at an early age, but didn’t do anything about it because he thought it wasn’t possible. After hearing about the existence of trans women, specifically Valerie, he figured trans men should also exist. That’s when he cut his hair short and asked people to call him “he”. His parents were so worried and frightened, they started praying that he’d see that he was a girl. Kyle ignored it, but he couldn’t when they started talking about bringing him to the church and exorcizing him; that’s when he got all his stuff and went running to Valerie’s doorstep, begging her for shelter.
Gabriel is a very shy trans guy who’s had trouble making friends all his life. But one thing he knows for sure: he’s a man, and he won’t stop being a man just because it won’t please people. He’s sweet and gentle, but unfortunately people either avoid him or call him bad names. His mom, the only source of affection in his life, died of sickness, leaving him alone with his indifferent and self-centered father. He had been threatening to kick him out for some time, since he’d began displaying what his dad described as “a faint masculine behavior”, so he decided to leave before he could.
