Something I haven’t noticed anyone mention is that in the piano safe room of Cryptic Notes, “Her” plays on the piano… but it’s not quite right. Like someone’s trying to remember something, but it isn’t quite the same as it was before.

Yes! I only managed to trigger it twice during the frenzy of playing, but it has some interesting effects. It causes a golden glow similar to the Memory pages, which is rather interesting. I'll see if I can cut out my fellow archivists from the recording I got to showcase it.

Moving on from it, it's interesting, too, because it makes the third variation of "her" we've had in Identity V. We've had the "Her" associated with Time of Reunion (an orchestral performance), which was possibly, the "Her" found in Oletus' Symphony (performed by Alice, potentially composed by Frederick), and now the "Her" found in Cryptic Notes.

While it's likely "Her" is a diegetic piece of music, we have much to speculate on how it exists and what its variations are. Given it is part of "Time of Reunion," we can infer that Frederick composed it, due to Frederick composing the suite (Frederick's Eighth Deduction). However, we don't know whether it was composed solely by him or, like "Time of Reunion," it takes from an unfinished composition of Mrs. DeRoss. I could see either option being possible. The differences between the Oletus' Symphony and orchestral performances of "Her" could be tied to the composition, with Oletus' "Her" being a piano-only piece as Frederick composed it, a variation due to Alice innovating mid-performance, or both.

However, neither of these two explain why "Her" appears in Cryptic Notes, both in its regular form (the DA CAPO music box) or the variation heard in the piano room. Is this due to what Orpheus is writing Bringer of Doom about, which appears to be an attempt at processing his grief towards Memory and Alice, again? Is this due to the advancements in Orpheus' Delphi addiction increasingly affecting his ability to recall even recent memories? Is it the original version, if Mrs. DeRoss was the first to compose it?

It also makes me curious as whether or not "Her" (or "Time of Reunion," "Call of the Abyss," or "Echoes of Memory") will make an appearance in the main storyline. Considering Frederick is the last Da Capo missing an ID Swap (unless a new character is somehow introduced, he is the only possible candidate for an ID Swap in 2027's main story update) and his association with the piece, it's possible that it will debut alongside him. Perhaps in the form of the music box, given its appearance in DA CAPO?

Alternatively, perhaps it'll appear if we reach the "Red" storyline, due to its promise to reunite with Detective Orpheus in the present timeline.

burke is a very carefree but nontheless a caring grandpa!

beneath the surface burke really loves kids :) he just sucks at displaying affection in general

some hunters would call his behavior irresponsible

...like letting memory stick her finger into his bottle of vodka and taste it

to which he responds with a simple *shoo* motion with his hand

like would you rather have her try a harmless drop of alcohol or learn how to pallet stun you to death at 8 years old smh🙄🙄young people these days

refers to himself as "old man" and "grumpy old"guy", even "fossil" occasionaly

always fixes memory's dolls once they tear!

^proposed installing mechanical limbs and laser eyes but took it back once he saw the concern in her eyes

when he falls asleep grandpa style™ on the sofa while watching TV he often wakes up with a face full of badly applied makeup

(by memory, of course)

and he'd let her bake his face even if he was awake 🫡‼️ he'd go on and call himself a "pretty princess" for her

jumping back to burke's irresponsibility, back in his workshop he has a shit ton of prototypes and weapons eagerly waiting to be tested

..and, honestly, is there a better person to test them other than his beloved granddaughter? there's no child out there that dislikes pushing colorful buttons and detonating bombs! (safety first tho)

his babysitting is 50/50 honestly. either he watches over her every move like an eagle or he peacefully reads as she runs around in circles

rule no1 in the manor: never, and by that i mean NEVER let burke in the kitchen.

it's not even the fact that he sucks at cooking, it's just that he's so used to the speed and precision of his machines that he rages whenever the freezer gets stuck or the oven is not hot enough

^so it's a bit of a hassle when memory wants some warm milk alongside her cookies.

"keep away from the kitchen for some time sweetie, grandpa is trying not to give himself 3rd degree burns while using a microwave!"

sometimes memory ends up spending the entire day in his workshop helping him

and trust me, working with burke is a BLAST (literally and metaphorically)

burke likes fishing in his free time so i believe he and memory would go on fishing trips together :)

definetly has one of those funny snapbacks that say stuff like "fish want me women fear me"

even if they don't catch anything it's the quality time that matters!

reads memory her favourite bed time stories! of course, his narrating isn't as good as orpheus's, but he tries to voice each character differently so that's immediately a plus

Winter is here.

To Orpheus, the sight was not a question to him, nor was it an illusion. As he looked onwards to his window, all he could see was the falling snowflakes, the frost decorating and climbing up his window.

Oletus Manor never had snow before. During his stay, the only maps he's known to have snow was Leo's Memory, and even then... It was more of a hindrance than something to admire.

He could vaguely remember the blood staining the pure white landscape and shuddered. He forgets how hunters are mere... Beings, cursed to chase them as survivors in the death game. Worse, wield things that would leave them with phantom aches.

Alas, that was something he shouldn't remember.

Pushing himself up and from his seat, he walked out of his room. He needed a breath of fresh air, and maybe a trip outside of the manor will be enough. After all, going outside never hurts anyone.

And so, Orpheus ventured on.

As the footsteps echoed down, down, down... The novelist noticed that the residents aren't around. It was like the manor is empty, devoid of life.

Then, he hears it.

The giggling of two children as he saw himself running from one of the halls, being dragged by another child.

"Come on, Orphy! We don't get to go out often!"

"H- Hey, stop pulling! I can walk!"

"You'll take too long if you do that! Come ooooon!"

He couldn't tell if he was seeing an illusion, but after blinking a few times... He isn't. If anything, it felt more like he's walking down the manor that is more resemblance of his memories.

... Something that he's repressed for so long.

Quietly, the novelist followed the two children. They were weaving through halls and corridors, the blonde excitedly dragging his younger iteration through them like she knew the location herself.

It's no wonder she's able to go around the manor, Orpheus thought. She's a clever lady, but to think she used to live here...

Still, what he didn't expect was for the two children to get to the front door. When he had arrived, the door was locked and bolted shut, but in his sight, it was left ajar. Clearly, it was a ploy— a trap to think it was already opened.

Although he seems hesitant, he watched the two kids pushed the door wider, letting the sight of white engulf them as they both went outside.

Then, he could hear it.

The faint cries of joy as the children's voices grew faint, and he felt himself taking a step forward.

He knew that this was a mere memory, something that was tied to the effect of those drugs they were forced to take. However, he didn't want to break the illusion just yet.

His gloved fingers rest itself on the wooden door, his monocle glistening as the first few snowflakes touched his body. It felt... Real. Cold, yes, but real— unlike the maps and games he's endured.

With a gentle push, the novelist went out of the door, trudging on.

For a mere moment, he swore he felt someone hold his hand.

Warm.

He felt warm.

"Are you ready, Orpheus?"

And for once, the man looked up and on to the one leading him: the one tied to his memories.

"I'm ready, Alice."

He couldn't forget how warm her hands were, and how her halo shone just a bit brighter amidst the snow.

Just like when they were children.
