You know you're aro/ace when...
So the assumption in society is that you're either straight OR you're gay, it's a very close-minded, black & white mindset that the majority has. (Knowing this, the savage part of me loves to mess with the minds of others by saying, "Can I be straight with you for a minute? I'm not," and then just leave them in their semi-confused state.) And this mindset can happen for people in the community as well, like someone who's pan may say, "Oh you're not exactly hetero so you're at least a little homo, if not bi or pan." So yes, I've given the impression to several people over the years that I might be a lesbian, but never have I ever laughed so hard at someone's misconception of my identity before this.
The other day, I got into a conversation with one of my male cis-het friends about my identity, who's very polite and honestly curious, & this is how our conversation went:
Him: "...Do you mind if I ask you a... personal question? It's okay if you don't want to answer, but I'm just wondering..."
Me: "Yeah, go for it."
Him: "So... there are rumors around the music department about your identity & that you're not exactly straight..."
Me: "Oh really, said by whom?"
Him: "Well, I don't want to start any drama, it was mainly *3 people who are spreading this..."
(*disclaimer: I don't remember if he said 3, but it was a small number.)
(Also, bitch!, don't start something like that just to try to drop it & think I won't notice.)
Me: "Who? And if you want more information I want names & more information."
(He ended up agreeing to give me one name of someone he directly knows has said this rumor about me because he is friends with this person, who I'll call Sherry and will refer to in 3rd person.)
Me: *uncontrollably starts laughing when I hear the name
Him: "Yah, it's because they're bisexual with a preference towards women so they told me, 'trust me, I know she's a lesbian.'"
Me: *actually starts hysterically laughing
If you knew Sherry, let's just say that they're one of those people that thinks they're hot shit at specific things, like singing, playing guitar, and composing Indie style songs in English AND Spanish. And they're also strongly rooted in their opinions & will argue against people on their OPINIONS which differ from Sherry's opinions. Like, yes they have some talent, but calm yourself, you're not the only person to exist on this planet & people have the right to their own opinions. So just, that they said something so smugly about me that is 100% incorrect, feels like a victory.
Idk if Sherry originally started this rumor about me, but apparently in the music department at the college I currently attend, I'm a lesbian.
