Mapping Spinoza Onto Reality

The most common “desirable state” for many humans is not independence or achievement, but minimal-effort persistence which means to reproduce, secure resources, offload the cost onto others.

If the system (welfare) provides resources, then desire manifests as reproduction and here more children means more resources and dependency and making others (state/taxpayers) to carry the survival burden.

That fits Spinoza’s definition perfectly. Action (childbearing, claiming benefits) is determined by affection (the prospect of survival secured cheaply).

In such systems, motherhood becomes an economic strategy, not just a biological role. Social care incentivizes dependency. The child is no longer primarily a family investment but a ticket to resources. Refusing marriage or work is rational. It maximizes independence from a partner while keeping the state as provider.
