The cleaning/exercise connection
I can't stop thinking about it...
They are so connected, it's ridiculard (that's my new word, btw, a mix between ridiculous and retarded. Inspired by Marbs, who's growing vocabulary is always coming up with cool new words :)
Exercise, in a sense, is a cleansing of your body--getting rid of the yuck and making it look good and feel great. Just like cleaning your house gets rid of the yuck and makes your house look great (and therefore you feel good because of it). Plus, if you're really engaged in your cleaning, you will definitely burn some calories.
And like I said before, about how they both have to be kept up forever,...if done regularly and correctly, over time, they can become just another facet of a seamlessly natural and efficient way of being.
And nobody does efficient better than Flylady.
Jerm was the one who introduced me to her several years ago, right around the time we initially moved to Florida. Seeing her again now (clearer the second time around), I am 100% convinced she is The Secret wrapped up in a chubby, little, purple fairy!
She has all the traits...her simple, straight-forward approach to life, mixed with faith, acceptance and love, makes it feel like everything is perfectly right in her world.
Flylady not only taught me how to clean (sorry, Mom), but also why I should (a clean house makes for a happy family). She came up with a cleaning system that worked for her and she shared it with the world. Cleaning is hard and overwhelming, so she broke it down, simplified it, wrote a Cleaning for Dummies, if you will,...when really, all along, it was a Cleaning of the Gods!
The most important lessons/tools I learned from her all those years ago, I still use today:
A cluttered house makes for a cluttered mind. (When my outside world seems in order, I can better focus on myself).
To just start! (Whatever it is, wherever I'm at. Just do something/anything in regards to that goal.)
Baby steps!...(Take 5 minutes. Just do it. Now.)
To "FLY (Finally Love Yourself)"! (Accept my current situation and move forward!)
Even though I could never keep up with Flylady's complete system, I took her basic idea and adjusted it to work for me. Picking up all those little gems and tricks-of-the-trade that she had already figured out and recorded so nicely.
Just like with her Before Bedtime Routine, she taught me how to lay out my days so that I could actually get everything accomplished. Which in turn, gave me the confidence to tackle even more things. The fun things. The things I really wanted to do!
...as I experienced last night. I was organizing the last few unpacked boxes still cluttering up our Florida room, which led to me finally going through my sewing stuff, finding the perfect boxes to house my supplies, getting inspired by the combination of fabrics and ribbons, and then designing a perfect little dress for my babe. Of course now all I have to do is sew it :)
But, to me, that is proof that organization is just as important as happiness. Because when my life is in order, there's more room for good things to come into it, which will in turn, make me happy...almost like they feed off eachother.
I have come a long way in this cleaning/happiness game. I can see Flylady for the real teacher she was/is to me now. (I love you, Flylady!! Thank you for everything!)
And that gets me thinking...why can't I do what Flylady does with cleaning, but with exercise.
I know Flylady addresses exercise...their description of this sounds exactly like what I'm doing:
"Body Clutter is not about the "perfect" diet; it is about sound nutrition, personal discovery and a journey that only you can take...
...recognize the mental clutter behind the Body Clutter, you will be able to release it, keep it off and FLY like never before."
But, this is just my spin/comparison to Flylady's BabyStep Boogie list for starting over.
(Cleaning) -vs- Exercise:
1. (Go Shine Your Sink: Do not wait until later! Do it now!)--Get Your Music
2. (Get dressed to lace up shoes!)--Nah, it's Florida. And I hate socks! :) Besides, I love jumping into a workout in the clothes that I'm wearing..(which, luckily for me, is usually casual and comfortable). I have that feeling that if I don't do it right that instant, I'll find too many distractions along the way to "getting ready to exercise", that I'll never start. So I jump in and shed/change clothes as necessary (also helps that I exercise in my bedroom).
3. (Fix your hair and face!)--Grab a hairtie; but I like to leave mine loose until it gets too hot. I love flinging it around while I'm dancing :)
4. (Make your bed.)--Clear the space, making sure there's enough room to spread out and strut my stuff.
5. (Set your timer for 5 minutes and start clearing off putting away some items in one Hot Spot.)--Crank the tunes! Go for as long as I can/want, feeling the music and doing my thing.
6. (Each hour, sit down and rest for 10 minutes. Set a timer!)--I love the idea of stopping to sit, to be still and think of nothing...to feel happy, for as long as I can before my mind starts to wonder. And whether I make it 2 minutes or 20, I can chalk it up to solid time spent bettering my world. Because if I use that time to think good thoughts, good things will come into my life.
7. (Limit your computer, telephone and TV time.)--Right on! The less TV I watch during Marb's nap time, the more time I have to get shit done!
8. (Put on some perky music.)--The key to everything! I let itunes/Pandora lead my entire workout, helping me decide which exercise to do next, and at what speed and intensity.
9. (Do a very small Before Bed Routine - lay out clothes, check calendar, brush teeth; write it down!)--I have my favorite go-to songs and exercises. If I'm not feeling my workout on any particular day, I can always just knock those out and still feel like I got a great workout.
10. (Keep repeating to yourself, I am not behind! My home did not get dirty in a day and it will not get clean over night.)--Keep repeating...damn, I look good! :)
PS--another Flylady favorite of mine: "Shiny Sink 101" .
