journal: do you ever write just so you can enjoy something to read?
my secret is that i write the thing i want to read now, feel ambivalent towards it yet post it, then come back six months later with enough distance to truly appreciate my stupid niche tastes. it’s a gift for later me who is too desperate to be picky.
pulitzer: tell about/link a piece where you felt your writing was the best.
kind of cheating to toss a series here but ‘in the end’ is six very short stories about dying a good death, or accepting the end of a good life. reading back on them now they’re all quietly hopeful despite the subject matter, accepting the inevitability of death or someone choosing to take on death on their own terms.
narrator: what pov do you like writing in best?
i have been informed by people who know what these things are - i.e. you mentioned it once - that i exclusively write in third person limited. so that. whatever that is.
dickinson: what insecurities do you have about your own writing? what do you think you should improve on?
i’m incredibly slow at producing words. i default to garbage sentence structures and either use too many commas or not enough. i don’t write anything big or structured, i.e. i tell small domestic stories that happen in a few hours in a single location. any time i try and pace something out over a few days or a few chapters it turns out bland as overchewed gum, so i tend to stick with what i know. i don’t edit, or if i do edit i end up overworking it until it goes bland and beige. it’s like my two modes are halfassing it or doubleassing it and there’s no sweet spot.
input: what’s something you hate that people say to you about writing/your writing?
“when are you going to finish ‘good ones lost ones’“ :v
the usual huffing about ‘why write porn when you can write gen character studies, you’d write well if you didn’t have cumbrain damage and put handjobs into everything’ to which i say, what’s wrong with writing a character study about my favourite where he’s also getting his back blown out? i didn’t unpack all these years of closeted repression not to write as many self-indulgent masc4masc handjobs as humanly possible.
mifflin: what do you feel is your strong suit in writing?
man i don’t know if i even have a dominant strong skill to nominate. i’m good at fixing up AO3′s weird italic formatting. that’s a good skill to have.
