Situated in the far southwest of Piedmont, Valle Varaita shows its sublime shades of green in Chianale, the last reachable village in the valley before crossing the mountain pass into France. Prato Nevoso is a ski resort framed within the wonderful landscape of the Maritime Alps. If you are up for an unforgettable journey, why not go on the gondola lift 'La Rossa Panoramica'? After an adrenaline-pumping ride up, you will enjoy an exceptional panorama, taking in breathtaking views of the Alpine chain on one side and the Cuneo plain on the other. A tour of Piedmont ought to include lesser-known towns rich in art and history like Saluzzo, Savigliano, Fossano, Ceva and Mondovì. Located at the foot of the southern Alps, not far from the border with Liguria, Mondovì is a unique town in that it is divided into two main neighbourhoods: the upper one Piazza, and the lower one Breo. Breo has less to visit in the way of places of artistic and historic interest. But what it does have is nonetheless striking: the decorated frescoes on the side of a building, at right angle to the church of Saints Peter and Paul with its colourful façade and impressive clock face. Beautiful silhouettes of female figures can also be seen as you walk up to the funicular that runs between the two neighbourhoods. It costs €5 for a return ticket and it's worth visiting the medieval quarter of Piazza for its monuments and views over the Cuneo plain and Alps. Located about 70km southwest of Turin and 50km northwest of Cuneo, the little mountain hamlet of Chianale lies in the Val Varaita on the border with France. As such, it is the last village in the valley. And, at 1,614 metres above sea level, Chianale is completely covered in snow during the winter months. Scattered all over the huge Cuneo province, aptly called 'La Granda' (the Big One), are towns of historical and cultural heritage: Alba, Bra, Fossano, Savigliano, Saluzzo, Mondovì — the list goes on! To get an idea of Mondovì's medieval past, go up the funicular and have a wander round the historic centre, perched almost 400 metres above sea level. From the very top you are rewarded with a vast view of the snow-capped Alps, the Cuneo plain and the Alta Langa hilly area.
