Reposted from @odinaala_igbo What is the spiritual usage of OJI/KOLANUT To Ndi-Igbo Oji is a symbol of acceptance, a symbol of life (Onye wetere Oji, wetere ndu). In more ways than one Oji represents the truest socio-religio-cultural life of the Igbo People. It is usually presented in every Igbo gathering, such as; traditional marriages etc. In every Igbo themed event, the honor of breaking the Kola is bestowed on the oldest male within that vicinity. This is done as an act of humility and respect. Oji-Igbo is an important symbol in the religious life of Ndi-Igbo. It serves as a emissary of good will by using it to intercede or solicit for favor or blessing .It is also a tool for communication between man and spirits. Moving forward on the religious importance of Oji, Oji is used as a tool for Divination(Afa). When broken into several cotyledons, Oji speaks the language of the universe interpreted by a Dibia-Afa (Diviner). According to Obiora Nnaji “ Oji completes a communication protocol involving, Anyawu-the sun, Ani-the earth, the diviner and the supplicant. He further explained that the sun and the earth consist of a large information database comprising of the :past, present and future. Oji becomes a tool used by the diviner to access data concerning the petitioner. ”When an enquiry is made by a petitioners”. The scatter pattern of the Oji /kolanut returns a code, which the diviner interprets for the supplicant. To a non-initiate, Oji becomes a fruit shared during festivities and gatherings. But to an initiate Oji becomes a communicant and a symbolic representation of the ONENESS OF LIFE whilst the division or sharing symbolizes the great sorrow “ODACHI”. . . . . . #ankara #igbankwunigeria #igbo #igboamaka #igbobride #igboculture #igbokwenu #igbotraditionalwedding #learning #media #naijabrandchick #nigeria #onlyinnigeria #skills #spiritwork #tradition #traditional #kolanut #oji #kolanutchallenge https://www.instagram.com/p/CaUMQiBNEho/?utm_medium=tumblr

Ala - the Earth Goddess of the Igbo tribe of Nigeria
Been a while but hey 👋🏽 been stuck in fundamentals hell lol trying to brute force improvement but I’ll still post every now and then, I actually post a bit more on my IG (artsyoji) if you’re interested in that. But yea my family can’t see this artwork and if you’re African/of African descent you probably know why lol. But I think regardless of your religion you shouldn’t demonize or ridicule the customs/beliefs of your ancestors just because Europeans told you to, but that’s a whole discussion in itself. I also put the traditional sketch I did and the statue the art was based on. Hope everyone’s doing good, and thanks for checking this out 🤗
