A collection of rather shabby looking terracotta Rhubarb forcing jars do somehow look the part in this rather formally box edged organic kitchen garden in east Cheshire.

So often I see empty glasshouses and polytunnels many of them in desperate need of repair! I cannot help but think they could be put to such good use for just a few hours a week, some left over seeds from last years vegetable sowing or even propagating a few plants from your own garden borders.

Starting my new role as Head Gardener, I have been lucky enough to have a large glasshouse that was largely empty in December to claim as my own. After creating an inventory it soon became clear that I had at my disposal 100’s of surplus seeds from previous years crop growing and since im looathed to throw anything away, I decided to trial some early crops in what will be our glasshouse indoor crop bed.

Winter into Spring is an ideal time to sow microgreens and salad leaves, in-fact baby, carrots, radish and beetroot will also provide a handsome sweet reward for the keen gardener happy to make use of the cool glasshouse space out of season.

Trialing winter salad leaves, mustards, baby carrots, radish, and baby beetroot from leftover last years seed has been very successful and incredibly rewarding.

I often walk past and munch on a few fresh organic spinach or lettuce leaves, taking our first cutting this week I was able to fill a large zip lock bag with enough salad leaves for a large family meal.

Best still if picked with care your plants will continue to provide weekly salads and tender roots right up until it’s time to plant your Tomatoes and Peppers.

Which is going to be a few weeks yet especially if the slugs have anything to do with it, I thought a mouse was nibbling on my Tomato plants until I spotted a slug trail and had to search through the pots and trays to find the fat slimey feeder.

My organic slug trap in place in case there are any small slugs lurking, its amazing how quickly they can destroy a crop. Just wondering now if I should be using organic beer in the trap?
