[10.03.21] ✧ ft. my study space in geneva

Hello lovelies! I am making a vow today to be more committed to my blog, seeing as I really miss my studyblr community. Today I am going to start the Zoomster studyblr challenge - even though I will be off by 10 days. ✨

I will start with some updates about the past few months!

Life updates: I am now back in Geneva after spending about two months in Colorado with my friends and family. I am super happy to be back and to be in the city again! uwu

Uni updates: Last semester, I got three A+s. THREE.  Out of five of my courses! I Even though the Swiss grading system is quite odd for me, I had a final course grade above class average for each of my grades (about 0.3 above class average)! Right now I am currently averaging a 5.50 (or an A equivalent). Je suis TELLEMENT contente. ✨ ✧ This semester, my classes are online again, unfortunately. But I am taking some really amazing classes!: Social Theory II - Critical Epistemologies, Ethnographic Fieldwork, Environment and Society, Urban Visualities, and Research Design and Proposal Writing in the Social Sciences. I absolutely love my courses. ✨

Love updates: I am dating a French person, and my French has improved EXPONENTIALLY in the past three months. Absolutely insane!

Health updates: I have been jumping back and forth between medications, having weird withdrawal symptoms and other disassociating side effects (and it doesn’t help that it is extremely difficult to communicate with my US doctor and receive prescriptions abroad). However, overall: I think I am feeling at the best point mentally in my life than I have ever been. I am also eating very well now that I am back in Europe, meditating every morning, and I am hoping to get on a workout routine soon!

Now, to commence the Zoomster studyblr challenge!

My name is Delcia! I’m currently a first-year master’s student in the anthropology & sociology program at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, Switzerland. uwu. I am originally from Colorado, and received my bachelor’s from UC Santa Barbara in anthropology (with a minor in linguistics) in 2020. Aspiring professor, sagittarius, torn between light and dark academia, BIG sapph, SJW, and love books + coffee. Anything else? ✨

[11.10.20] ✧ ft us in the library printing the material for saturday’s protest

Hello everyone! I have noticed I’m very bad about posting every day, but I will slowly try to make it more routine. This weekend I was the photographer for the Graduate Press for two protests: the #DalitLivesMatter and #StopBolsonaro. I will have to post pictures soon!

I also wanted to participate in the October Studyblr Challenge, but since I post irregularly I will jump in as I can uwu:

Day 11 - What is something that you have learned from studyblr?

I have learned, importantly, the difference between projecting my organization (via social media, pretty bullet journals, nice notes, a full calendar, etc), and actually being organized. (In addition, aligning my posts and photographs with what my space actually looks like and how I actually study, rather than something that fits an aesthetic).

I’m getting to the point now where I document only my most organized aspects/moments, my favorite parts of my study routine, etc., rather than creating a moment “just for the blog” (or designing a bullet journal page when that form of organization doesn’t work for me anyway) just to get likes. I document my best and most authentic moments so that I can feel confident about those moments and so that I feel proud of my space/routine/etc. I know this is what works for me, and hopefully I will actually capture what might work for others - I believe that is what we should all aim for.

I apologize for abandoning my blog, at this point for long stretches. ): Life has been so crazy, busy, and hectic. I am also working on my mental health, slowly but surely.

Today was one of the most successful days I’ve had all semester -- I even worked out!

Hopefully I can get involved with my blog on a regular basis again. For now, I hope everyone is well and staying safe.

It’s finally happened everybody -- I’m in Geneva!!

Per usual, I have been MIA for a few weeks, so I apologize to everyone who has messaged me and I have not gotten back to. I promise these next few weeks all I will be doing is blogging, because now I live alone and I have so much free time!!

I moved in to my apartment on the 15th after a grueling 24 hours of three connecting flights. Three!! Denver to Chicago, Chicago to Montreal, and Montreal to Geneva. 

I am so beyond happy. My apartment is beautiful, and my room has it’s own balcony. I live with all boys, which is super relaxing, and they all happen to be very clean and amazing chefs? 

I am having the time of my life, however, figuring out my cantonal paperwork. I have to apply for a residence permit within 14 days of my arrival, and it’s been a hell of a process. They keep asking me to call, but I don’t have a Swiss number yet, and I can’t leave to buy a SIM card because the canton itself has me on a 10-day quarantine? Also having a hell of a time trying to figure out how to pay rent when I can’t break quarantine and cannot legally open a Swiss bank account without an in-person appointment, but we’re figuring it out. 

Either way, I am beyond happy that I am finally here and my dreams are turning into fruition. It’s remarkable that I get to spend the next few years in this amazing place. ♥️

[19.09.20] ✧ 4/100 days of gratitude

ft. the beginning-of-the-semester phase where I go through each syllabus and put all of the assignments onto my homework calendar

Apologies for the delay in posting! Last week I finally got my room fully situated (I’ll post pictures soon), and this past week was my first week of class!! I have so much homework already, but the institute is so wonderful. I’ve already met all of the professors in my program, and all of the classrooms have hybrid online and in-person systems to facilitate online work and rotations, including QR codes and numbered seats in each classroom for contact tracing purposes. Here is my class schedule:

These past few weeks I have been very grateful to be living a very privileged life; I have a wonderful apartment, living my dream life in Europe, and I am getting a wonderful education. I know I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for the well-off family I was raised in, the opportunities I have been given, and having access to good education throughout my life. However, access to education in most places in today’s world is still very limited; access is still too often based on class and status. I hope that, with my field of study and subsequent career, I can advocate to make education accessible to everyone.

ft my adventures on three different flights in transit to geneva

I am currently taking an intensive french language class monday-friday from 15h-19h and it might be the death of me. It’s also the absolute basics, so it’s stuff I already know, but it is good practice. I hung out with some of my roommate’s friends this past weekend and they spoke french all through dinner, and let’s just say I’m glad that I wasn’t entirely lost!

I feel like I’m finally finding my footing being here in Geneva. I register for classes tomorrow and I couldn’t be more excited!! Here are a few on my list:

I can’t believe how excited I am to be a part of these classes! Hopefully I can get in to all of them though, (and unfortunately I will have to drop one by the second registration, but) we will see how it goes!
