Grammar: ～たら、～(past)

When the first part of a sentence uses ～たら and is followed by a clause in past tense, it means "when ～". The second part of the sentence generally describes something you were surprised about or did not expect to find.

Conjugation (た-form + ら):

ex. 行く（いく) -> 行ったら（いったら）

ex. 買う（かう) -> 買ったら（かったら）

ex. する -> したら

----

Usage:

ex. 友だちに電話をかけたら、知らない人が電話に出ました。(ともだちにでんわをかけたら、しらないひとがでんわにでました) - When I called my friend, a person I didn't know picked up the phone (and it surprised me).

ex. 昨日図書館に行ったら、先生に会いました。(きのうとしょかんにいったら、せんせいにあいました) - Yesterday when I went to the library I ended up meeting my teacher (much to my surprise).

Grammar: V + ようになる

When the plain form of a verb is added to ようになる, it means that something has come to be (verb) or that some kind of change has taken place.

Conjugation (plain form):

ex. 食べるようになる (たべる) = have come to eat

ex. 読めるようになる (よめる）= have come to be able to read

ex. できるようになる = have come to be able to do

Usage:

ex. 日本語を一年勉強すれば、漢字が少し読めるようになる。(にほんごをいちねんべんきょうすれば、かんじがすこしよめるようになる) - If you study Japanese for a year, you will come to able to read a bit of kanji.

ex. 21歳になると、バーに行けるようになる。(にじゅういっさいになると、バーにいけるようになる) - When you turn 21, you will become able to go to bars (unlike right now).

ex. このごろアメリカ人も刺し身や豆腐を食べるようになりました。(このごろアメリカじんもさしみやとうふをたべるようになりました）- These days Americans also eat things like sashimi and tofu (which is a change).

ex. 日本に行ってから、日本に興味を持つようになった。(にほんにいってから、にほんにきょうみをもつようになった) - After going to Japan, I came to have an interest in the country.

Grammar: ～ばかり

Adding ばかり after the plain past tense of a verb means to "have just done ~" or "have just finished doing ~". After adding ばかり the phrase behaves like a noun.

Conjugation (plain past + ばかり):

ex. 入ったばかり（はいったばかり）- to have just entered

ex. 食べたばかり（たべたばかり) - to have just eaten

ex. 飲んだばかり (のんだばかり) - to have just drunken 

ex. 卒業したばかり（そつぎょうしたばかり) - to have just graduated

Usage:

ex. 学校に入ったばかりだから、十八歳でしょう。（がっこうにはいったばかりだから、じゅうはっさいでしょう）- Since she has just entered college, she is probably 18 years old. 

ex. それは私が買ったばかりの車ですよ。(それはわたしがかったばかりのくるまですよ) - That is the car that I just bought.

ex. 日本へ行ったばかりのころは、日本語がわからなくて困りました。(にほんへいったばかりのころは、にほんごがわからなくてこまりました) - When I was a newcomer to Japan, I had trouble understanding Japanese.
