magnus and alec + “happy birthday” and “i hope you like it”
“Alec.”
Alec startled, the pen in his hand skidding across the paper in front of him, leaving a jet black trail.
“Sorry?” he asked. Magnus narrowed his eyes and then held up the two shirts on hangers he had with him.
“I asked which one you prefer,” he said.
Alec glanced at both of them, licking his lips. “Blue.”
Magnus tilted his head and turned to head back into their bedroom, then paused with one foot over the threshold and looked back at Alec.
“Alexander,” he said in a measured tone, “if you’re thinking about tomorrow —”
Alec shook his head, trying to look as if he hadn’t thought about Magnus’ birthday tomorrow at all.
Magnus pursed his lips. “Because when you’ve had as many birthdays as I have, you —”
“— start to celebrate them differently, I know,” Alec finished. He gestured to his notepad, which was full of doodles he’d made while he went over his plans for Magnus’ birthday. “This is just…” He cleared his throat. “Stuff. For the — cabinet meeting on Monday.”
From Magnus’ expression, Alec could tell Magnus wasn’t buying the lie for one second, and he couldn’t stop himself from grinning. Even though Magnus was right that he didn’t mark his life out in years, but decades — even centuries — it wasn’t going to stop Alec from spoiling him, and they both knew it.
Magnus just gave him a look and bustled back into their bedroom to get changed.
It was different, this year, too. It was Magnus’ first birthday since Alec had become immortal, so Alec wanted to give him something special to mark it.
He’d come up with the idea of a scrapbooked photo album, one he spent hours putting together with as many photos of them as he could find. Something tangible, something that lent weight to how far they’d come together — and how many adventures they still had to go.
The morning of Magnus’ birthday was crisp and bright, and it was a few hours before either of them ventured out of the warmth and comfort of their bed. Alec got up to make them coffee and grab Magnus’ presents, then hurried back as quickly as he could.
They settled in under the covers again while Magnus opened his presents. Alec handed him the album with a smile.
“Happy four hundred and —”
“Don’t remind me,” Magnus said hurriedly, though he was smiling, too. Alec just laughed and rolled his eyes fondly.
“Happy birthday, then,” Alec amended. “I always did like an older man.”
Magnus’ eyes lit up with barely concealed glee and he laughed as his hands brushed along the sides of the gift.
“I’m very glad you didn’t say ‘an old man’, Alexander,” he mused, slipping an elegant finger through the tape on one end.
“I hope you like it,” Alec said, just as Magnus pulled the album out of the paper.
Magnus’ lips parted and his expression grew soft. On the front of the album, their names were embossed in gold, and Magnus opened it with trembling fingers. He turned each page carefully, smiling and laughing at the photos, looking incredibly touched.
“Oh,” he said, when he was a few pages in. The photos stopped there, and Magnus looked at Alec with a knowing, loving smile.
“Blank pages,” Magnus said, smile growing wider. He reached out and took Alec’s hand, squeezing it tightly. “You got bored, didn’t you?”
“You caught me,” Alec teased. He leant over and kissed Magnus, his smile melting from playful to sincere. “We have an eternity together,” Alec went on, voice quiet but bursting with happiness, and Magnus’ own smile grew, “and we’ve only just begun.”
