Irong lung Spoilers:
Hog wild with the choice positions of the phrasing/world ideology for Eden and the C.O.I.
Like the choice to go "it's bigger than all of us. It's bigger than me" to -> "you want the butcher?!" Is so poignant. That specific sequence of phrase use, of the two opposing ideologies in this movie, is just so- powerful.
Because Eden for all it's symbology of life and living, is a death cult. It's a death cult. Eden likely trains "brothers" to become suicide bombers/sabotours. Rushing towards death so their "bodies can become the soil. From which all seeds will grow." Which makes Simon a turncoat traitor in a dual sense in that he is 1) a member of an organization that kills people and 2) refused or tried to stop the destruction of life at Filament station.
He's a walking contradiction for Eden's philosophy. But a risky murderer that is useful to the C.O.I blood ocean mission. But he's not safe enough to return to an already dwindling society. Because COI doesn't know yet if he is safe to return. 65 kill count is one hell of a number to have one your record.
Not like I suspect Ava was. Her willingness to dive for Simon and the black box does show a recklessness that would be needed for the mission. A recklessness only so-far observed in Eden ranks. There's also the intentional scarring/blindness in one eye that leads me to think she too is a criminal. Just one that was reformed from her own dive that returned. After all, who better to convince a cultist to break psychological conditioning: than one who has before. Only problem is Ava bought too hard in the COI and shoves that Ideology on Simon too soon.
Simon doesn't start to believe in the value of life, and the COI mission motto, until he starts bargaining and pleading, the longer his life his threatened; the more he realizes his life is in some way valuable. For someone who was raised in a cult that says 'your only value is the corpse you becomee' thats a hell of a wake up call to get. Then SM-8 blackbox makes contact with his sub, and the elderich beast tries to use a botched and bloody version of Eden's Ideology on him, with all the talk of God and limited understanding "viewing the world thdrough a pinhole." His world change becomes cemented. He commit more to living, for the sake of himself and others.
The hero one might expect from a COI member. But he can't be. He's a murderer, intentional or changed, or remorseful. He's not like Ava: reformed with a violent past, (maybe murderous history that we're not aware of. Clearly not as bloodied as Simon, but still). He's not like the SM-8 crew willing to die and become part of a collective nothingness either. He's grown beyond that death cult belief.
He's now both. Human willingness to fight and kill the numbered few. Those who try to kill en mass as he once did. Compassionate and caring enough he's willing to die so others can live. He understands the importance of personal sacrifice, more than he ever did with Eden.
"This is bigger than me." An adjustment to the motto that carries hundreds of people in the galaxy. People still alive and fighting for a foothold in the universe. A tentative new hope just accepted, at the zenith of his voyage. A promise he swears on first. A meaningless phrase reformed into new life. A life he must give up.
"You want the butcher?! I'll give you the butcher!" The shout, the violence. The familiar fearlessness with death. Metamorphasized not as a terrorist promise, but a valor filled war cry. The protective redirection from the budding hope now drowning in blood behind him. By making himself the threat to the "god", not the black box. The target for death.
After all the conclusion Simon comes to while on his mission ultimately boils down to this:
"What's more likely? All the planets and stars disappearing and leaving a few ships? Or a few ships disappearing and everyone back home wondering where they went? If it happened once why can't it happen again? "
He risks and ultimately sacrifices his life. On the slim hope that they are not the majority in a dying cosmos. But a small minority that we're taken by a malevolent thing. And likely became the very seed of life -within the blood- that can protect and guide others home. (If one would interpret the second to final scene as the sudden and violent growth of a tree, using the creature, SM-13, and himself as the soil. His pendant bursting out at last. Preserving the light and blackbox above in the roots and covering foliage).
ALL OF WHICH IS RECORDED. The black boxes have audio records on the entire trip. Voice clips that are likely voice activated records. Much like he heard SM-8's choices. People will hear his as well. They'll hear of his crimes, his choices, the effort he went to get them the information they need. The little hope he came to beleive in the final hour of his life. There will be people in the galaxy who find that box, hear his words, and have their worldview changed.
The universe is bigger than a single life.
Damn anyone that tries to take that life away.
Edit 2/3/26: I got to a third showing, made some minor detail and spelling error corrections for clarity. Now if you dont mind I have to go sob again.

Heya, does anyone have any recommendations for PHM x Iron Lung fanfics?
More specifically, where Grace is very very sick and Simon takes care of him
How do you tag the protagonist of Iron Lung?
Simon Iron Lung or a variation thereof
Simon the Convict
Simon the Butcher
The Convict
Simon
Simonplier or Lungiplier or a variation thereof
if simon were to survive, not only would his body be wracking with the reprocussions of becoming a tree in the form of chronic pain in his veins and lungs,
but he would have severe c-ptsd. i want to say added because he was already deeply disturbed by filament station, and eden, and all of the harm tied to his title of the butcher. not to mention his aggressiveness and impulsivity, both large symptoms. hallucinations are heavy and id like to take this segment from @flankerclinger0a's iron lung au
obviously when theres only 2 prominent space stations that are tied to your trauma you dont have much you can do to escape, so hallucinations are near constant. these exact ones. he tries to contain his rage in his nice little personal housing station in the coi (in the game, convicts from filament station are expected to "repay their debts and integrate into coi society," so there is a non-zero chance of simon ever going back to eden) but more often than not he splits and either breaks something or leaves something ruined. then he breaks down crying.
on the topic of his physical damage, i think maybe he ends up nearsighted as a result of cornea burns from all the isopropyl he drank. permanent organ failure is also a major symptom. concentration difficulty is big. hemorrhagic gastritis. heres a long list of long term symptoms tied to drinking isopropyl alcohol:
thats all i can think to mention right now. i think he'd feel as though his limbs are very stretched. chronic scratchy/sore throat. yeah.
