Look guys!! It's Simon!! From iron lung!!! Where nothing bad ever happened. Remember how Simon got to go home free after he and Ava met up and he gave her the super awesome box of knowledge? Yeah!!! Look here he is, from that iconic scene at the end of the movie, where they're able to restart civilization thanks to Simon, and he sits in a field of sunflowers. You know, the flower that represents the desire to be free? Anyways. This definitely happened, and everyone had their happy ending, and even the scary fish monster god got to have like.. kids, or something. And a nice bow. Turns out Mr angler blob fish was actually just really lonely.

Everyone got to know him as Simon, not the convict, who helped save everyone. Yay!!!

Incoherent cringe fanfic rambling undercut

On the topic of Simon iron lung hurt comfort, if anybody out there has already written, or WANTS to write some Simon x reader fanfiction(I have money wink wink) specifically where things are somehow fine and they sit and a field and everything is hunky dory and Simon gets to experience flowers, I will be a happy man. I'm really cringe and I need this in my blood please. Let's all hold hands and frolic through the fields of flowers and look at the pretty sky and pretty grass lalalalalala. And it's super awkward but it's cute and really bittersweet but also serene and kind of healing. I just want Simon iron lung where things are OKAY and more or less joyous and cute. Everybody wants gore and angst of their comfort character. What if I want comfort of my gore and angst character. Is that too much to ask?

Anyways. If you make this, or it exists, please send it to me, tag me there, do whatever it takes to get it my way. I just need things to be FINE. And for me to be there. That's all I ask before I die

Slight Iron Lung spoilers if you haven’t seen it

Massive rant.

Something I like about Simon’s characterization is that he never cries. Yes, he’s been vulnerable and broken down during many different points throughout the movie - but something interesting to me is that he never actually sheds tears.

He’s quick to get angry, and he’s clearly a moderately empathetic guy; he feels guilt for blasting people with radiation and clearly feels strongly about filament station. There’s a lot going on there.

But amongst his crashouts, he’s never actually let himself cry. The closest we got to him genuinely almost breaking down in tears was when he gets down to his last bit of oxygen and realizes he won’t have enough to survive - when talking to the voice on the intercom. He asks the voice to keep talking to him, likely to calm him down amongst other factors, and very quickly switches to “Actually, I don’t wanna talk anymore”.

When he’s having his big vent about humanity, where we get his big famous line “I just wanna live, is that so wrong?” He quickly backtracks and sucks it up by pushing the idea down. “It doesn’t matter, does it?” It’s almost like he feels stupid for caring so much.

When he realizes Ava isn’t going to save him, and he says “You still need that, right?” He sounds broken, but again, doesn’t shed tears.

What strikes me about this is that he’s been through some of the most exhausting, nightmarish experiences and the whole time he’s lost on the SM-13 and can’t contact anyone, he’s completely alone. Even when he has no connection to humanity and is completely isolated he doesn’t let himself actually get emotional - he’s not putting on some persona to seem tough in front of the C.O.I, or anybody else. In his most lonesome moments he feels there’s no point to his emotions.

With that said, it poses many interesting aspects to his character. Is it the exhaustion that prevents him from crying? Is he already just overwhelmed? Or is it guilt - does he believe he’s not worthy of feeling that emotional pain because he may deserve it in some way?

Or is this something to do with how Eden raised him? Is this something form of something more deep rooted and societal in this world? I mean, everyone we’ve met so far in the movie seems either hostile or in general disinterested.

It’s a part of Simon I really like. How he’s not just one of those characters who cries at every misfortune. His emotion is strained and pushed back by survival and in every distressing situation he resorts to anger over tears.

It’s almost like he’s scared that if he lets himself totally break down he’s admitting that he’s given up.

“What’s that?”

“Oh, nail polish!” Grace held the bottle up for him to take.

“I… don’t know what that is” Simon examines the polish, turning it over in his hand.

“It’s a kind of lacquer that you put on your nails. Makes them look nice and pretty”

“Why..?” He hands it back over.

“Why not? It’s part of expression, and also fashion I guess” he shrugged.

“Okay…” he still didn’t really understand it.

“Do you wanna try some?” Grace looked at him hopefully.

“I…” he hesitated.

“You— you don’t have to! I just wanted to offer cause you hadn’t seen it before. I thought you might wanna try it?”

He thought it over, then tentatively said, “…Okay”

“Really?! Okay!” He scooted back on the floor, “Come ‘ere then!” He patted in front of him with a big smile.

Simon’s heart squeezed at his excitement.

He moved to sit facing Grace, “what now?”

He unscrewed the lid, “Give me your hand”

He placed his hand in Grace’s outstretched one.

“Then,” Grace placed the bottle on the floor beside him, grabbing the lid and brush, “I paint it onto your nails. Like a colour by number” he huffed a little laugh.

He’d have to ask what the fuck that was later.

Right now he was enjoying the focused expression on Grace.

The nail polish felt kinda weird, and cold. But not bad, just different.

Grace carefully painted Simon’s nails, getting a minimal amount on his skin. Then he pulled back, releasing Simon’s hand.

“Now,” he screwed the lid back onto the bottle, “we wait for it to dry”

Simon twisted his hand back and forth, inspecting Grace’s handy work.

“Just try not to bump it on anything for a bit cause it won’t be fully dry for about an hour”

“So I can’t do anything?” He looked up, kinda peeved.

“No! You can do stuff after about ten minutes, you just have to be somewhat careful”

“Oh... okay,” he paused for a moment, “sorry...”

“No, you’re okay, Si. I hadn’t told you that beforehand so I get it” he scratched the back of his neck.

They were quiet for a moment before Simon spoke up.

“If that’s used to look nice, why do you have it?”

“Is that supposed to be a dig at me??” Grace looks mildly offended but mostly confused.

“No no!” He breathes a nervous laugh, “I—I meant why would you have it on a space ship like this!”

“Ohhhh okay” he laughed, “I thought you were insulting me!”

They laughed for a minute before Grace finally answered, “It can sometimes be used to patch small things or put a protective coat on something. I’m not entirely sure if that’s why or if it’s something of Ilyukhina’s” he admitted, “but I’m guessing it’s the latter because it’s coloured instead of just clear”

Simon hummed in understanding.

This ended up becoming more a common practice for them. Especially when they managed to make some more when they got to Erid.

Simon found that he quite liked how it looked, and he’d never say no to seeing Grace work on something. Even if it was just painting his nails.
