When are we going to talk about the violation of human rights adoptee’s face and how society as a whole brushes it under the rug?
I am an international adoptee. I have no access to my medical history or biological family. My birth records and adoption documents were falsified, coercion was involved, and I was sold (trafficked) to a mentally ill child abuser. Growing up being told “you should be grateful” and “you are so lucky to be adopted” was very damaging.
In any other situation these things would be illegal and people would go to prison, so why is it considered ethical when it comes to adoption?
Adoption alone is trauma, regardless of the outcome it is rooted in loss. Adoptees are 4x more likely to commit suicide. We have an Adoptee Remembrance Day (Oct 30th) to raise awareness of adoptees lost to suicide, adoptee victims of abuse after adoption, and adopted children murdered by their adopters.
We are suffering and our voices continue to be unheard. Please, listen to adoptees when we speak up about our trauma. Our rights matter.
