A serendipitous arrival: the postman brought this lovely copy of March Cost’s 1932 fantasy novel just in time for the anniversary of the birth of one of my favourite artists, Rex Whistler, who designed the cover. No one else, to my mind, perhaps with the exception of Felix Kelly, has ever designed covers of such splendid baroque darkness and whimsical, mysterious beauty.
