Rex Whistler's illustrations for Edgar Allan Poe's Annabel Lee, in a hand-written anthology of favourite poems he put together with his friend Stephen Tennant while in his first year at the Slade. (The illustration on the left is inspired by Walter de la Mare's novel Henry Brocken, in which the title character meets various characters from literature. A serendipitous arrival: the postman brought this lovely copy of March Cost’s 1932 fantasy novel just in time for the anniversary of the birth of one of my favourite artists, Rex Whistler, who designed the cover. No one else, to my mind, perhaps with the exception of Felix Kelly, has ever designed covers of such splendid baroque darkness and whimsical, mysterious beauty. Two weeks ago, I spotted a unicorn in the Rex Whistler room at the @tatebritainlondon 🦄 Such a magical time. Had lunch with friends @sarah_thornton_art and Mark. We saw the #baroquebritain exhibit which was fabulous. The world has changed so much since then - looking forward to the light at the end of the tunnel. Since returning from my trip it’s been hard to draw. Maybe it’s jet lag or maybe it’s the current anxiety.
