gosh, that's a lot of different fandoms i've been writing and posting fic for lately... anyway, looks like i usually prefer to start with short, simple sentences!

I wish I could say I had any adequate progress here, it’s been so long and the entire idea is there

So its polarizing reception (...and it clearly being duct-taped together as a film) I did deeply enjoy Thor the Dark World, but also I have felt very strongly about attempting a gratuitous “well this is how I would’ve done it” AU basically since it came out lmao.

And how I would’ve done it amounts to: more assertive Jane means Frigga comes up with her own plan to get the Aether out of her when Malekith attacks, including busting Loki out of prison herself, posing as him as both cover and emotional leverage, the Odinbros and Jane go on a terrible roadtrip starting with getting accidentally stranded on Jotunheim. The bros bond, Jane is snarky, Frigga is even snarkier, and Sif and the Warriors Three get their own subplot because why not.

“Oh dear, they do say the mind’s the first thing to go,” Loki said with mock concern. “Mortals lead such brief lives, you’d best put her out of her misery before it gets any worse--”

Tolkien actually supported fanfiction, though he probably didn’t know the term. He specifically hoped that “other hands” would run with what he created and build upon it and fill in the gaps, and he definitely knew how much of literature is just that. So. Y'know.

Yeah, I thought I remembered something along these lines. Since you mentioned it I went and poked around and found the full quote, which is from one of his letters:

I would draw some of the great tales in fullness, and leave many only placed in the scheme, and sketched. The cycles should be linked to a majestic whole, and yet leave scope for other minds and hands, wielding paint and music and drama.

Though in another place (Letter 292) he expresses pretty sharp frustration with two separate fans who sent him stuff about publishing sequels:

I send you the enclosed impertinent contribution to my troubles. I do not know what the legal position is, I suppose that since one cannot claim property in inventing proper names, that there is no legal obstacle to this young ass publishing his sequel, if he could find any publisher, either respectable or disreputable, who would accept such tripe. 

I have merely informed him that I have forwarded his letter and samples to you. I think that a suitable letter from Allen & Unwin might be more effective than one from me. I once had a similar proposal, couched in the most obsequious terms, from a young woman, and when I replied in the negative, I received a most vituperative letter.  

Could be argued the difference between publishing through a house/contacting an author directly and online fanfiction not-for-profit, but it’s impossible to say.

i wish they had gone to the trouble of contacts or editing them to green merely so we could avoid endless rounds of this argument, if nothing else XD

ikr? part of the problem was they photoshopped the promotional materials for Thor 1 to made Loki’s eyes green. you couldn’t really tell so well in the movie, Branagh used cold, icy light for Jotunheim and warm golden colours for Asgard,  and it was hard to get a handle on Loki’s eye colour. Hiddles doesn’t have the same kind of brilliant blue eyes that Hemsworth is blessed with. he’s got more the *squint - what colour is that* kind of blue, unless he’s got really good lighting. 

Whedon gave him good, bright lighting. 

then there’s opening scene itself in Avengers - so. much. blue. seriously go look at it. blue light from the tesseract, blue light from the sceptre, blue from the portal, blue from the leftover energy generated from the portal, blue in the background. yeah, that’s a lot of blue. and the make-up! - super, super pale skin with bruise rimmed eyes, yeah his eye colour really popped there. And look at all the unfortunate drama it’s been causing ever since. :D

i’m getting so ???? how did we??? and thor ESPECIALLY?? deserve this?

i reject this reality, i expect thor and loki to drive their bunch of asgardians through space for years having star trek-like adventures

!!! seeing this reply i figured ‘wow i should just look for info’ and found a thing about students reporting that joe russo said they escaped, so YAY! I hope that’s not a cop-out and we see her again in a future film though...like when she comes to help everyone fight Thanos next movie....

I have sneakily implied it in a few fics, and I have friends who ship it, so I'm sure it has been done more than a few times ;)

@illwynd which fics? I don’t remember noticing that, but then you do have an extensive back catalogue and I’m not sure I’ve made it all the way through....
