It’s crazy that countries on the edge of the Sahara desert are reversing desertification by just digging half circles
The ground in these places is too compact for water to soak in during wet season which leads to flooding but digging these holes gives the water a place to stop and soak in. And they’re pushing back the desert with this. By just digging holes.
The new plants also help even more water soak into the ground which reduces flooding even more.
These places also give people places to grow food and graze animals like people are turning completely dry compact desert into a refuge for wildlife and plants and solving regional food insecurity just by digging holes.
The half-circles are called zaï! They're a traditional farming practice in the Sahel desert, and their introduction + reintroduction can be largely credited to Yacouba Sawadogo, the man linked above! He reintroduced and innovated on the zaï on his own farm in the 1980s, and did extensive outreach (along with scientist Mathieu Ouédraogo) to encourage other farmers to adopt them as well.
He also promoted the use of cordons pierreux, which are basically just lines of rocks to reduce erosion, preserve sediments, and increase water absorption.
Immensely cool dude. He's been a personal hero since I learned about him.
"ooh i hope we get a christmas episode of the pitt"
i'll only accept that if we see every garland, every song, every "merry christmas" leeches the very lifeforce from dr robinavitch's eyes. i hope it's uncomfortable as hell. i hope it makes the goyim feel ill. i hope it's so jewish-centric that the audience gets a sliver of a taste of what it's like to be a jew during the fucking "it's still secular!" "holiday season." i want them to watch as every "you just need to get into the spirit" sends dr robinavitch closer and closer off the ledge of the fucking hospital building and wonder if maybe they've ever contributed to the torture jews endure
antisemites arguing with other antisemites about what is the correct and incorrect way to be antisemitic. leftist antisemites will preach to far right wingers about how to PROPERLY harass and target vulnerable jews, and the comments are all of them arguing amongst one another……. YES, EVEN YOU AS A SELF PROCLAIMED TOLERANT COMMIE— YOU ARE ALSO ANTISEMITIC 9 TIMES OUT OF 10. THE CALL IS COMING FROM INSIDE THE HOUSE!!!!
do these people not realize that they are all the same to us? that there is virtually no difference in the rhetoric they spout or their ultimate goals (ie, to harm jews locally and abroad)????
a fucking radical, left wing, “anti bigotry” leftist teaching antisemites HOW to antisemite. the irony isn’t lost on any of us.

Honestly the amount of people I've talked to who formed an opinion on the geopolitics of the middle east who were suprised to learn that hezbollah is not the elected government of Lebanon, and the elected government is seperate and hates hezbollah is shocking.
If you do not know that basic fact, you should be shutting the fuck up!
I guess they think it's the same as Hamas in Gaza? ("Elected" being used loosely in both cases...)
Don't try to give me that "Oh, the reason we care so much about Israel and not other human rights violators is because Israel is a a US (or UK, or European) ally and we send them weapons and tax money!" You know who else is a US ally we send money to for security cooperation? Fucking Pakistan. You got anything to say about them sending thousands of Afghan refugees back over the border to starve under the Taliban? Or their blasphemy laws? No? We don't give aid to the UAE or Saudi Arabia because they sure as shit don't need it, but we do sell them weapons and cooperate with them on intelligence and security. Any thoughts on the Saudi bombing and blockade of Yemen that was creating the world's biggest humanitarian crisis a few years ago? Or the UAE funding and arming the RSF's civil war in Sudan, including their Darfur genocide (the sequel), which has now overtaken it? Not to mention the abuse and enslavement of migrant workers! You want to set up an encampment at your university demanding they divest from the UAE or stop taking money from Qatar? It's all dirty fossil fuel money anyway! Don't you want to harass your political representatives and threaten them with death if they don't promise never to take money from Gulf Arab interests, and always to vote against weapons sales to them?
Yeah, I didn't think so.
I truly sacrificed to create this ridiculous mug. biting clay is a bad sensory experience 😔 who would have guessed
I’m tempted not to glaze the bite marks so it looks like it was bitten through the glaze lmao
I showed this to my husband and he said he wants four mugs like this in various states of eaten, so he can swap when no one’s looking and make it look like he’s actually eating it.

[about an empire that was on 3 continents at the same time] it wasn't colonialist by any conventional definition
A lot of people seem to think that to be colonial, it needs to:
1: Spread the English language around. Maybe you'll get lucky and they'll also accept Spanish and French as languages spread by colonialism. In that order of likeliness of recognition.
2: Settle white (including light skinned non-white) people in non-white (limited only to non-white people with darker skin) areas.
3: Engage in the transatlantic slave trade.
4: Alternatively, have been Roman. And then it's a good thing, for some reason.
OK, I've now come across the post this seems to be referencing and:
I was wrong about 4. SOMETIMES, if you're """lucky""", alternatively it's Rome, but that was good. For some reason.
Not surprised to learn some people don't even think Rome was an empire-but-good because they don't think Rome was an empire, for some reason. Just disappointed.
well you see, the whole reason to contort the definition of colonialism is to claim Israel is a colonial project. And Rome ate Israel and turned it into Palestine. It would be inconsistent to hate Israel so fucking much and not love Rome for wiping it off the map for hundreds and hundreds of years

Two visibly Jewish men were stabbed on the Upper West Side; officials are investigating and a suspect is in custody.
Two men were hospitalized after being stabbed near Central Park on Manhattan's Upper West Side on Thursday afternoon the New York Police Department (NYPD) told Newsweek, adding that a person of interest is in custody.
New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin called the Upper West Side incident an “antisemitic stabbing."
The victims, ages 57 and 50, were found with stab wounds near West 84th Street and Central Park West at about 1:31 p.m., the New York Police Department (NYPD) told Newsweek via email. Both were transported to a nearby hospital and are expected to survive.
CBS News' Anna Schecter reported on X via NYPD that one of the men was Jewish and wearing a kippah, while the other man was Asian.
The NYPD is actively investigating the suspect's motive.
The Auschwitz Jewish Center Foundation posted on X, "Jewish Americans should never have to fear being attacked because of who they are or how they are identify. Authorities must conduct a swift and thorough investigation and Immediately provide enhanced protection for Jewish neighborhoods, schools, synagogues, and community institutions. Every American deserves to live and worship in safety, free from fear and hatred."
Menin posted on X, "I am absolutely sickened and furious by what appears to be an antisemitic stabbing on the Upper West Side. While we await additional details to be confirmed, we know that what is happening in our city is abhorrent. The fear in the Jewish community is real. Every New Yorker deserves to feel safe in their neighborhood, regardless of their faith or identity. We must remain united in condemning antisemitism and ensuring those responsible are held fully accountable. I thank the NYPD for its swift response in apprehending the assailant. My prayers are with the victims and their loved ones."
The stabbing occurred on Tisha B'Av, a day of fasting and mourning in the Jewish calendar.
New York City Councilwoman Inna Vernikov, co-chair of NYC’s Bipartisan Task Force to Combat Antisemitism, wrote on X that she received reports that the attacker was yelling, "Allahu Akbar," an Arabic phrase translating to “God is the greatest” or “God is greater."
Newsweek has reached out to City Hall via email on Thursday afternoon for comment.
I would actually go as far as to say that MOST abuse is unintentional. I think most people will go through their lives without ever experiencing intentional abuse. People are abusive because they're selfish, because they're stressed, because they care more about what society thinks they should do than the impacts of their actions on their children and partners, because they think what they're doing is correct, because they've made it make sense in their own heads, because they think they can fix their victims, they think they can fix their relationships, they think they can stop you from leaving, they think they can make you a better partner to them, they think that means you need to do what they want. We've sort of constructed mental illness in a way that doing this shit to other people counts as a form of mental illness because it is anti social behavior in the literal sense— it is behavior that causes social harm.
I don't say any of this to excuse it. I think everyone needs to be more aware of this because if you think abuse has to be intentional you will never realize you are capable of abusive behavior. You will never realize you are being shitty to the people you love, because YOU know what you mean, YOU know you don't mean any harm. But you're doing harm. You need to pay attention to the impact you have on other people, and you need to do it all the time, Especially when you feel least capable of doing so. Sorry! You live in a society. Get your head out of your ass.
