Writing Wednesday- The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue
Henry Strauss sat on the roof he’d almost walked off of a few years ago, looking out over the bustling city. He couldn’t help but wonder what secrets Addie would see from this view, what adventures she’d had that he never got to share with her. Most nights he spent in this spot futilely writing Addie happy endings that would never be published and that he would never know if they were true. He hoped she was happy with Luc, that the darkness treated her well. Henry wanted to be angry at her, but he’d long ago been reduced to missing her and hoping for the best. He was also grateful to her. With Addie, he had learned how to live.
Now that Henry had time, he didn’t know what to do with it. He wished Addie were here. She would know, and he finally had time to let her show him places she’d already been to and things she’d already done without feeling that overwhelming anger at himself for making that stupid deal. So Henry set out to live his life like Addie LaRue, searching for amazing food, enjoying the arts with Bea and Robbie, and discovering the secrets of every place he traveled to. He even picked up French and listened for her accent in the voices of Parisians. He almost visited Villon, but Addie had told him it was too changed to be her home anymore.
Henry never wrote another book, but he did start a blog for the dreamers of the world. He wrote about the places he traveled and the food he ate, wrote about how secret clubs and views in each city, wrote about how to escape to these places for those struggling financially. Addie had inspired the artists of the world, and Henry inspired the dreamers of the world. He typed puns about not having to sell one’s soul to see the world, wondering with each letter if the darkness would appear and take his soul after all, angry at Henry for giving the desperate hope.
Henry still looked for Addie in every dark-haired girl with freckles on the street. The image of her permanently engrained in his mind kept him alive, and the memory of her laugh warmed him in the winter. Eventually, he found a girl who looked nothing like Addie, who was content to explore the world solely through books. She kept him grounded on manic days, and he taught her how to have an adventure. He found a girl who didn’t mind his storms and who let him name their daughter Addie. As far as she knew, he was just another fan of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue.
Henry grew old with this girl, never feeling his age until he found himself leaning on a cain on the roof he’d almost walked off of decades ago, the fall breeze blowing his grey hair into his eyes. In his old age, Henry still parted ways with everyone he met by creating an ellipsis. He avoided periods in his partings whenever possible, even whispering “see you later” to each of his parents’ coffins when they passed.
When Henry’s time came, he still found himself scared. His heart beat fast, and he thought of all the things he still hadn’t done, but he was ready to go. There would always be things he had never done, just as the world would never stop changing. And he was so tired. In one last homage to Addie LaRue, the girl history could never quite forget, his tombstone read, “I remember you.”
Okay so (spoiler) but I just got to the part about Henry's curse and it is DELICIOUS I haven't felt this way about a book in years and I have so much left to read! I can't wait to find out what happens
Bro. Broo. Brooo. If any of you who has an arc of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, would ever be so kind as to share it with me. I would cry. I’m so desperate to read it, lol, and I also can’t wait til October when i can own it myself. I’ve been eager for this book for soo long now. VE Schwab is a master writer.
Is it concerning that Henry's 35 mugs doesn't sound like a lot to me?
I need someone who has an arc of The Invisible life of Addie LaRue. I’m definitely going to buy it when it comes out, but waiting six months to read what is 100% going to be a masterpiece has me going insane. Someone pleaseeeeee.
Okay so I finished the invisible life of Addie LaRue and it was okay but tbh I was a bit disappointed by it.
I think it was a lot because it had been so hyped up that I was never going to like it as much as I hoped I would, but mostly I didn't love the pacing. It would cut from the "current" timeline back to Addie in France and I found the flashbacks were just way too long and slow in a lot of places. They also dangled the whole Luc relationship history a lot and I felt like I got it too late in the story. I think I would have been hooked more if we heard about his and Addie's history earlier and I could have compared him to Henry as they got to know each other. Idk in general the book felt longer than it needed to be and I would have liked more Henry
It actually reminded me a lot of the OG version of the Siren by Kiera Cass (another supernatural/cursed woman who falls in love with a really sweet and adorable boy, with a lot of history and flashbacks), which had some pacing issues but one of my favorite romances of all time. Addie and Henry had a similar romance I loved and then there stopped being that much romantic stuff like 2/3 of the way through
I mean I was already in love with Henry because of the whole hot chocolate thing but I fell HARD for this precious bean when he couldn't sit still through a movie 😭
