My high schooler is a mentor student to my first grader and helped make this Barbara and Tim Allen book (directions found on the Pathways to Literacy website) for him. When I told him we were going to read it he said, "Well, I don't read too good." I asked him to tell me what he thought was going on on each page. The video shows his version. Then we read the actual story and I picked out signs and words that he knew and he read them all-- doing better than he thought. I noticed a problem with distinguishing the words there, their, and they're-- the last not so much as the other two. But it provided an opportunity to review the term 'homophone.' If you can't do it in print then learning their braille counterparts can get confusing. So we backed up a minute, read a funny story using them, then played a game.
