This was taken last February. I can't wait to see my elementary boy in second grade! The kids return next week. He came to school every day and was so proud of his braille that he was teaching his classmates. The label on the old braille writer warns of not pressing Mrs. Perkins' ( the braille writer's name) without paper in it because it gives her indigestion. Here's my April door decoration. It's a sunny outdoor scene with 3-D clouds and daisies. One cloud has the title in print and ink-braille. It reads, "Spring Things." Each cloud and flower has a word in print and ink-braille that is associated with spring, like birds, flowers, Father's Day, Mother's Day, pollen, showers, and green. The contractions are circled. My high schooler is a mentor student to my first grader and helped make this Barbara and Tim Allen book (directions found on the Pathways to Literacy website) for him. When I told him we were going to read it he said, "Well, I don't read too good." I asked him to tell me what he thought was going on on each page. The video shows his version. Then we read the actual story and I picked out signs and words that he knew and he read them all-- doing better than he thought.
