We had a blast tonight at #REELScience Starship Troopers @cedarleetheatre hosted by entomologist and Invertebrate Zoology Collections Manager Dr. Nicole Gunter! For such an occasion, we even brought a really "BIG bug" with us, #Bathynomus giganteus: a benthic (deep sea) isopod from the museum. "Roly pollies" or "pill bugs" that you probably played with as a kid are their terrestrial (land-dwelling) cousins. Arthropods have never been quite as large as the "bugs" in Starship Troopers, but the Earth had and still has incredibly large invertebrates such as the coconut crab (Birgus latro) and the now extinct giant millipede, #Arthropleura. REEL Science: Jaws was a blast tonight! Lee and I had fun talking to people after the film about sharks, both modern and fossil, with Greater Cleveland Aquarium's Dive Safety Assistant Matthew Ballish. We brought shark jaws from the snaggletooth shark Hemipristis, Lemon, tiger and sand tiger, and of course, C. megalodon teeth! There were a good number of kids and adults at the program. A good time had by all!
