Whew! I just saved this leopard toad's life - rescued from a snake's jaws. 🐸🐍😲Toads will scream in pain, a terribly loud shriek of distress. I heard it from inside the house. This photo is from a few weeks ago, on our porch. The little guy is about 3-4 inches long and sleeps in a potted plant during the day. When I heard the toad, I ran outside -- the toad was straddling the rim of the plant pot with one back foot in a long snake's jaw. Fortunately the hose fixture was nearby. I fired the hose full force on the snake. It took a few seconds but finally the toad escaped and scrambled furiously -- and with a little difficulty -- across the porch. It disappeared while I was still messing with the snake, so I'm hoping it will recover okay. As we always say at Stark Raving Ranchito: never a dull moment. BTW: The snake is a non venomous racer or garter.
