a bed of rocks

something about how the way that the ray of lights hit the water when the sun dances on the horizon is just right. especially after a day of hot weather, warm enough to induce sweat on anyone who steps outside. making the surface layers of their skin sticky and clammy. it’s when the sun sets that you know the day has finally truly begun as the temperature falls far enough that you can walk outside without dreading every single second that you’ve existed in the heat.
more so, when you can bask in the warm caress of the sun without feeling any burning lashes across your bare skin.
that is the case for nam seongyi.
sprawled across the slightly rough ground of the ocean pier, a good walk away from the fishing port that reeked of - well - fish.
seongyi had come across it by accident. having forgotten that it was even there until he had taken a very angry walk one day to try to escape the smell of the town that had begun to stain every fiber of his being.
it had hit him like a brickstone wall.
when he had realized that he no longer smelled fish. and ever since then, the small pier had served as some sort of comfort to him whenever ilsang was becoming just a bit too much to handle.
such as the previous night.
cats that refused to keep him company in the safety of his home, meowing outside his window all morning. the old air conditioning box in his home, broken in far too many ways for his comfort. and the smell of fish wafting around his room with the janky fan he had pulled from the closet to help cool him down.
sure, maybe his bad sleeping habits didn’t help the fact that by the time he was ready to knock out, the town had already begun waking up. the elderly vendors shouting across the streets and cheering heartily about plans for the day while he could do nothing to shut the sound or blinding sunlight out.
so alas, here he had found himself. seeking refuge on an oddly placed pile of rocks.
a better substitution for his dingy mattress at home compared to the broken and prickly pile of sticks lining the shore.
two hours lain on the ground. with no one or anything to bother him.
it might just have been the best deep sleep he had gotten since his arrival to ilsang.
