Very disappointed that the Annihilation film adaptation has basically nothing to do with the original book. Apparently the movie is fairly good according to what I've heard people say about it, but I only got like 40% of the way through because I realized that nothing I wanted to see adapted would show up.
like... why adapt the book at all if you're just going to ignore 90% of it? you're telling me that the TOWER doesn't show up? one of the most important focal points of the entire narrative of the book? you just completely fucking removed it from the story? why??? the characters don't call each other by their roles like in the book, which is one of the key parts of the feeling of dehumanization? what makes this "based on" the book at this point beyond using the name Area X a few times???
The actual book has a lot of potential for visual adaptation as a slow burn psychological horror, and I'm very annoyed that the actual adaptation decided to do literally none of that. I get that they were going for something different, but like... make your own story then? Don't just slap on the name and then reject anything from the original source!
I didn't even like the original book all that much and I'm still angry!
