About: Choi Sobyul was born in Seoul, South Korea to a successful businessman and his wife, their second daughter. Her family had always been well off so there had always been freedom for her to explore whatever she wanted to do with her free time as long as she was getting good grades. Influenced by her mother’s love of old films that Sobyul grew up watching, she expressed an interest in acting and being in theater. It didn’t take much more than that for her parents to get her a coach, and she ended up in her first minor role in a movie at the age of 10.
In addition to the few commercials that she did and a few more minor tv or movie roles, Sobyul also found herself on musical stages since her mother went ahead and got her a vocal coach as well, despite that Sobyul had never expressed an interest in singing. She just wanted to act. But her mother brushed that off, saying it would be more useful in the industry for her to be multi-talented so more doors would be open. Sobyul, not wanting to cause too much of a scene at the time, went with it.
Her mother’s efforts proved useful when she was given an audition at Spotlight Entertainment when she was 16, and at the time, Sobyul had thought that it was only for acting. What she didn’t know ahead of the time was that it was going to be an idol trainee audition, until she was asked to sing a song and show what dance abilities that she had. Having some musicals under her belt, Sobyul passed and ended up spending the next six years being shaped into the perfect idol, acting always being pushed to the back burner.
When she debut in Haze and was appointed leader, Sobyul took the position and chance to debut very seriously. It wasn’t exactly what she wanted to do with her career but now that there were fans and her group members counting on her, she wasn’t going to waste the chance. And much to her surprise, she actually loved being an idol, even when she was given the chance to start acting in dramas when Haze wasn’t promoting.
So when Haze began to be ignored by Spotlight, she tried not to harbor hard feelings for Iris or the company. Because even though the sudden hiatus on group activities gave her more room to persure acting, she could still see the upset comments and concerns from Dreamers. It hurt not being able to assure them that Haze would be coming back soon. But when Haze was abruptly disbanded, it broke her heart even though she tried to put a mask on those feelings.
Ultimately she decided to stay with Spotlight Entertainment, simply because this was where her career was rooted and she didn’t want to do anything rash that would put all of her hard work into the trash. It’s not a long term solution but it works for now, as they’re not actively sabotaging her from getting roles.
