Esteban Ocon undoubtedly hoped to one day seriously challenge Max Verstappen in the fight for the world title, but that hasn't happened (yet) for the Frenchman. Ocon has had to settle for four podium finishes so far, including one victory in Hungary. Incidentally, he has occasionally encountered Verstappen on track, but not in a positive way.

During the 2018 Brazilian Grand Prix, Ocon tried to lose a lap while Verstappen was leading. In his attempt, Ocon also hit the Red Bull driver, causing them both to spin. Verstappen also lost the lead to Lewis Hamilton . After the race, Verstappen nudged Ocon several times, for which he was ultimately sentenced to community service.

That incident is now behind both men, and now Ocon is defending the four-time world champion.

"Max is one of the best drivers the sport has ever had. Everyone knows he has incredible natural speed, that he's incredibly skilled with the car, and that he races instinctively when he makes a move," Ocon told FORMULE 1 Magazine .

"He's always done that, even during his karting days when we often met. Max has the pure, raw talent needed to succeed. But there's never any politics behind his aggressive racing style; it's just how he races."

"Max pushes the boundaries and sometimes he crosses them and it backfires, but then he admits it," says the Frenchman, referring to the clash between Verstappen and George Russell during the Spanish Grand Prix earlier this year. "I think Max is an incredible driver and I don't think he deserves to be criticized as harshly as he sometimes is," the Frenchman concludes.
