Apparently a lot of people don't care about or don't like matthew mcconaughey's character (palmer joss) in contact and I HAVE to question if you guys. Like. Understood the movie?? That sounds so mean but like TRULY I think if you think palmer is a pointless character or boring or whatever that you're missing the point

The movie, AT ITS CORE, is about the intersection of science and faith. It isn't science *versus* religion, even when an evangelical cultist blows up the first machine in an act of anti science religious extremism. From the very start of the movie we are shown that, though not necessarily religious in nature, science requires faith in your beliefs, and also that religious faith requires acceptance of science. Ellie's dad encourages her to be patient with her radio, encourages her to be curious about the world around her, teaching her not to give up. The reverend talking to ellie after her dad dies ends up trivializing her grief by trying to comfort her with a 'gods plan' spiel instead of acknowledging the mundane tragedy of bad timing and bad luck. Its all priming you for her first philosophical conversations with palmer: empirical evidence and confirmation bias are introduced as mirrors of one another, and later they discuss occams razor at the gala. These come back around at the end in the hearing, ellie defending her experience in the face of logical scientific skepticism because You Have To Stand By Your Beliefs, it's all variations on that same theme

Palmer, as a narrative tool, represents religious curiosity, and ellie represents scientific curiosity. Their relationship serves as a metaphor for the thesis of the movie: science and faith are inextricable, you cannot have one without the other. It even shows us what happens when you swing too far in either direction: delusional faith and pessimistic skepticism both lead to violence. The preacher suicide bombing the first machine, the senate hearing trying to cow Ellie into silence. Without palmer, without him serving as the healthy middle on the side of religion as Ellie eventually comes to be the healthy middle on the side of science, none of this would work even half as well!!! Hes a really fucking important part of the story actually!!!!!!!

And also, as an aromantic myself I obviously understand disdain for pointless romance storylines. Out of context, I'd be just as annoyed with palmer and ellies relationship. But that being said, allow me to come to their defense and provide some context:

This story was written by carl sagan and ann druyan, his wife. They met doing the PBS special cosmos, and druyan is well respected in astronomy spaces in her own right. As well as being a woman of science, she is a woman of faith, in contrast to her husband who was famously a non believer. From what I can tell, this never had any strain on their relationship, and when I watch Ellie and palmer in contact, I can see ann and carl in them. These characters are a love story to their love story, and I really cant begrudge the inclusion of that, you know?
