It sucks that WebP kinda ruined the rep for new image formats, cause formats like AVIF and JPEG XL are so cool

Did you know JPEG XL is 'backwards compatible' with JPEG images? You can convert JPEG images to JPEG XL without loosing quality during the process, while also making the file take around 20% less space due to better compression! It also has what's called 'progressive loading', which loads the image at a lower resolution and progressively loads the rest of the image

AVIF also has a better quality to file size ratio compared to regular JPEG images, just like JPEG XL, but doesn't nearly have as many features. It has better support in browsers though purely because Google decided to remove their existing JPEG XL support, which I'm still pissed about to this day

hi! people hate webp because it was created and propagated by Google as a corporation, and because it is largely unsupported by anything that isn’t Google. hope this helps

Well, WEBP is open-source and it isn't Google's decision that nobody else uses it. It's technologically superior to JPEG and it doesn't really matter who created it as long as it's useful and doesn't hurt anybody. It's also open-source and free, so Google doesn't profit from it. It may have been created by Google, but again, it's open-source and free to contribute to, so Google is far from the only one developing it. There's no reason to choose JPEG over it other than other people choosing not to support it.
