~Heaven on Earth~
Nat: Want some good news?
Jesse Fisher: Yes, please.
Nat: Caterpillars... give me my hat... they're just scooping along, right? Being caterpillars. At some point, these cells show up, called imaginal cells. Scientists don't know where they come from or why they appear. These imaginal cells show up inside the caterpillar and say: "Get psyched, caterpillar! It's butterfly-turning-into time!" And what do all the other caterpillars do once these imaginal cells show up?
Jesse Fisher: I have no idea.
Nat: They attack 'em! Try to kill 'em! They're, like: "Screw you, imaginal cells. We're happy being a caterpillar. Get lost!" But eventually, the imaginal cells keep growing and overtake the destiny of the caterpillar. They will be in this cocoon! And then guess what happens next?
Jesse Fisher: The caterpillar turns into a butterfly.
Nat: [repeats him excitedly] The caterpillar turns into a butterfly!
Jesse Fisher: That's awesome.
Nat: I know it is!
Jesse Fisher: Yeah, that's good.
Nat: And that is why there is no reason to be afraid. Because everything is okay.
Jesse Fisher: Yeah, I don't know if I believe that.
Nat: It has to be true. There can be no other way.
Imaginal Cells
May the best among us, the most visionary, the most inclusive, be the imaginal cells—for now we are in the soup. The outcome of disasters is not foreordained. It’s a conflict, one that takes place while things that were frozen, solid and locked up have become open and fluid – full of both the best and worst possibilities. We are both becalmed and in a state of profound change.

the magick amidst the darkest hour
Imaginal cells are the only cells inside of a caterpillar that understand that in the future, the caterpillar will turn into a butterfly. Caterpillars reach a point in their growth when it’s time for a metamorphosis. As a caterpillar prepares to transition, almost every cell in a caterpillar’s system starts freaking out, because suddenly the system is failing, nothing seems to work, and it’s clear that everything the caterpillar understands about how its world works is now unsustainable and obsolete. At this critical moment, the imaginal cells awaken, to show everyone else how to become a butterfly.
At first, these individual imaginal cells are attacked as heretics by the caterpillar’s immune system. But the imaginal cells find one another, and when they do, they cluster together in the same place, and grow stronger together. They don’t wait for permission, they just start creating a butterfly. Finally, as the caterpillar dissolves into goo, the rest of the cells stop attacking the imaginal cells, and begin to follow their lead instead.
