MYTH 10 - Atheists who left religion never really believed in God. Here's an excerpt from our latest myth about atheism, #10 in our series of 30. Head over to SecularByNature.com to read the whole post, and leave your thoughts in the comments! .......While there are certainly many “closet atheists” who still attend church for various reasons, it’s important to be aware that skepticism within the church isn’t limited to the people who fill the seats. There are countless examples clergy members who have come out as atheists after realizing the scriptures just have too many contradictions and can’t support their own claims. In fact, The Clergy Project (clergyproject.org) was formed in 2011 to provide an outlet for current and former religious professionals who have left faith and superstition behind. Their website states its mission is to “provide support, community, and hope to current and former religious professionals who no longer hold supernatural beliefs.” These are people who have dedicated their entire lives to learning, practicing, and preaching their religious beliefs, then many committed career suicide by coming out as atheists to their congregations. Do you think it’s reasonable to assume that people who really didn’t believe in God in the first place decided to base their education, profession, and entire lives on religion, only to flush it all down the drain? Or is it more reasonable to think that these religious professionals really believed they were on the right path to begin with, then lost their faith gradually over time as the contradictions, inaccuracies, and fallacies of their beliefs mounted? A friend of mine in his late 40s who was an evangelical Christian preacher for over 25 years once told me that he specifically noticed he was starting to lose his faith as he learned more and more facts about evolution....
