We’ve been collecting books for the kiddos ever since they came to live with us last year. Some are gifts from family and friends, some are from @dollyparton’s #ImaginationLibrary (an amazing program), and some are even from y’all! They love picking a new book to read every night, but as we’re educating ourselves and learning more and more these past two weeks about the importance of talking to kids early on about race, we realized we’ve made a huge mistake: there’s not enough diversity in the books on their shelves. This is not okay, especially if we want to normalize diversity in our house and raise children in an environment where we talk openly about race. To change that, we ordered some new books that should be arriving soon. If you’re interested, here are the ones we ordered: #PleaseBabyPlease, #HairLove, and #Sulwe. Worth noting that it’s important to try and purchase books regarding race from Black-owned bookstores rather than from big companies like Amazon. We all have the power to end racism for the future generation right where it starts: in the home, by having these types of conversations early on. As white people, part of our white privilege is not feeling the need to have discussions about racial issues with our kids, something that is sadly not an option for Black families, where these conversations start at a very early age. Kids pick up on so much more than anyone realizes, so it’s up to all of us to set the best example we can for them and their future.
