Yes, yes . I know it’s the day they call Christmas. So to all who partake, enjoy. It’s also Sunday, which means it is THE SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT!!! And for the last Sunday of the year, I give you Andre’s Aces. The fabulous five! These are the best five books I read in 2022! They all deserve your attention. So pull back the red curtain(swipe left) to reveal the Five Aces!! Didn’t Nobody Give a Shit What Happened to Carlotta 🏆All the conventions of writing fiction are kicked to the curb and it’s done so lustrously. Dr. No 🏆 Percival Everett is the best person currently writing fiction, period. Mother Country 🏆 A book that will stir all the emotions as you consider the weight of ethics and morality. Yonder 🏆 A story of the stolen and the thieves amplifying love and tenderness. South To America 🏆 Ms. Imani Perry is the best person writing non-fiction in these times. The Queen! This book proves it, as she easily shifts through genres, as she takes the readers on a journey South! So, that’s all folks, and if you want to read my thoughts on these great books, you’ll have to scroll through my feed and click on the covers. P.S. As an addendum, the best bookstore in the Southwest, USA is hands down @kindredstorieshtx. They have the best mix of inventory, customer service, appearance, and customer engagement. Terri Hamm is bringing a professionalism to book retailing, that is often lacking in many of our establishments! If you are in Houston, TX go check them out. If not you can order online. They are very deserving of your support. #ownvoicesreviews #bookpusher #pushingbooksainteasy #kindredstories #imaniperry #jabariasim #percivaleverett #jacindatownsend #jameshanaham #blackbooksmatter #goodblackreads #sundayspotlight #blackbibliophile #readologist #readmorebooks #bestbooksof2022 (at Houston, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cml6w8eLMS5/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Sunday Spotlight! Upon finishing SOUTH TO AMERICA by @imaniperry I was at a lost to describe how the prose hit me. I just think you should get and read this book. I got mine from @kindredstorieshtx I eventually wrote ✍🏿 Imani Perry is a musician with a pen. A lyricist with page as composition, she writes as if she is singing a song and it reads so beautifully. I’m a big fan, in fact I’m moving her into rarified territory. She is the newest member of my event category. Where her books are now events, not just another book, but an event I must attend to. This one is a love letter to the “South” written as part travel diary, part memoir, with history as foundation for present. She manages to tell a story that is both personal yet not constricted. She highlights different Southern cities summarizing their particular idiosyncrasies, always with a nod to their particular histories. And the prose is always commanding and demanding that you keep reading through these pages. There are so many passages I highlighted that if I start quoting them here, this review will go on and on. Just read it! Imani Perry, you have done it again. I’m eagerly awaiting the next Imani Perry event. #southtoamerica #imaniperry #ownvoicesreviews #bookpusher #sundayspotlight #goodblackreads #bookreview #bookreviewer #blackbooksmatter #blackbibliophile #goodblackreads #bibliophile #houstonreads #eccobooks (at Houston, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/CbVBHg5LPyl/?utm_medium=tumblr
Spreads from 'Mario Moore: The Work of Several Lifetimes,' a Black History Month Staff Pick. Over the years, artist and Detroit native Mario Moore (born 1987) has observed that the halls of elite institutions like universities and art museums prominently feature portraits of donors, deans, presidents, board members and scholars, and that the subjects of those portraits are mostly white and male. When Moore was selected as a Princeton University Hodder Fellow in 2018, he wanted to ask what positions garner such attention and how could painting contribute to conversations on who deserves to be recognized. He set out to meet Black men and women who work in and around Princeton University in blue-collar jobs and let the art-making process unfold from their collaborative interactions. In the resulting works, Moore redefines the colonial gaze for the subjects he paints, allowing them to look directly out with an unflinching stare. This publication includes sketches, drawings, etchings and paintings. Introduction by Jessica Bell Brown. Text by Tracy K. Smith, Imani Perry, Awoye Timpo, V. Mitch McEwen, Ruha Benjamin, Mario Moore. Went for a walk before the temperature reaches the expected 107 while listening to #breathealettertomysons by #imaniperry Man, I wish I had not been so adverse to non fiction as a young adult (I’m thinking of that as 16-30yo) because I really could’ve used a book like this one growing up without parental guidance as I did. My father died when I was 15 and my mother lived in a different country so we were never close. I read a lot to escape, to help me fall asleep, to calm the anxiety, but I never thought of reading others stories to seek the wisdom I needed. I often sought out older people as friends/parental surrogates instead. Ms. Perry’s words are beautiful and honest and are definitely worth a read in this time of fear, uncomfortability, unlearning, and hopefully change. I look forward to finishing this one. #bookstagram #audiobooks #memoirs #bookgeek #bookworm #booknerd #audiobookstagram #bookish #bibliophile #bookaddict #bookaholic #bookaholicsanonymous #bibliotherapy #bipocauthors #librarybooks #readersofinstagram #reading #currentlylisteningto #read #books #nonfiction #readmorebooks #readthisbook https://www.instagram.com/p/CEzi6Geg0MU/?igshid=1b6isx9r3of5i
