TRAVELS FAR is a memorial honoring our colleagues lost to COVID-19. Family members shared photographs and selected colors reflected in the 111 portraits included in this special tribute to the heroic transit workers who dedicated their lives to moving New Yorkers around the city and region. Artwork concept and design by @mtaartsdesign.

TRAVELS FAR takes its name from an original poem by former US Poet Laureate, Tracy K. Smith, commissioned for the memorial. TRAVELS FAR will be presented on digital screens at 107 NYC Transit stations at 10:30am, 2:30pm, and 8:30pm daily, Jan 25-Feb 7, 2021. An online version of TRAVELS FAR features an original score of the same name by composer Christopher Thompson, commissioned for the memorial, and Tracy K. Smith's poem translated in Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Haitian, Korean and Bengali.

Her poem "The Good Life" was featured in our 2013 Poetry in Motion with artwork from Amy Bennett’s “Heydays” (2011) installed at 86th Street in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn.

Spreads from 'Mario Moore: The Work of Several Lifetimes,' a Black History Month Staff Pick.⁠ ⁠ Over the years, artist and Detroit native Mario Moore (born 1987) has observed that the halls of elite institutions like universities and art museums prominently feature portraits of donors, deans, presidents, board members and scholars, and that the subjects of those portraits are mostly white and male. When Moore was selected as a Princeton University Hodder Fellow in 2018, he wanted to ask what positions garner such attention and how could painting contribute to conversations on who deserves to be recognized. He set out to meet Black men and women who work in and around Princeton University in blue-collar jobs and let the art-making process unfold from their collaborative interactions. In the resulting works, Moore redefines the colonial gaze for the subjects he paints, allowing them to look directly out with an unflinching stare.
